Yes. No reason the teachers should be held to a higher legal standard than anyone else. It is a violation of their equal protection rights.

Ya'll watch too much news. Keep in mind these incidents are still rare and are only known about cause of the tv. They were never reported on before there were more than 4 channels on the tv.

Do you guys know this applies to college employees too? It don't have to be a teacher. If you are a school employee, you are covered under the act if the sex partner is under 19.

So if it's not reported it didn't happen? Alrighty then..

I'm not trying to speak for doekiller. He knows the law and I do not. If his earlier post is accurate, a 16 year old in Alabama can have sex with anyone they want, except a teacher. So a 16-17 year old kid can sleep with a cop and no crime has been committed, but sleep with a teacher and jail time is warranted, even if the teacher worked at a different school. That's effed up.

Now I fully understand school policies on prohibiting those relationships. I'm not advocating that we make easy for teachers to prey on students. But when we're holding them to a significantly higher standards than police officers and others individuals, that's messed up.
Don't know the law either but I remember a Mobile city cop slept with a student and he resigned and wasn't charged with a crime. Remember a Dothan cop was sentenced to prison for having sex with a 17 teen year old, don't know/understand what the differences were? Here's the two stories. (Apologize could only find on Al.com)

as to your silly cop scenario, any cop caught doing that would be throw under the bus. cops get sent to prison for trading sex for tearing up tickets - no matter the age of the victim. it's an abuse of AUTHORITY.

James, the Dothan officer worked at the school, had an office there. The Mobile officer had no tie to the school, except for having sex with a consenting 16 year old. It was legal under the law, but that dosen't make it ethical or morally right in the eyes of his employer or the community.

Yup, its a basic "abuse of power" situation. Same as Bill Clinton taking advantage of an intern.

C'mon man. Did you read anywhere that he said he was okay with it? What he did say is that teachers are treated differently than every other member of society. THAT'S what he would opt to change.

There's a big difference in getting "thrown under the bus" and having to register as a sex offender the rest of your life. I'd take the bus for sure. There's nothing silly about it.

No I didn't read that he anything like that but the way things have been said it sounds like it may be a ok thing to do and nothing more than some teacher losing their job is all that should happen.
So this guy/teacher 50 years old in Tennessee that has run off with a 15 year old is ok... I'm sure the little girl thinks she knows what she's doing but this is absolutely wrong and yes I understand she's 15.
We send our children to school to be educated not to be preyed upon by any teacher no matter the age difference between them

Please explain to me how it is perfectly legal for me, you or any other adult non-teacher to screw a 16 year old, but it is a felony for a school employee to do so regardless if they even work at the same school as the 16 year old?

I am not condoning the act, not excusing the act, and not saying there shouldn't be consequences. No, I don't want my child being involved in something like that. But, it is simply unconstitutional to hold one group of people to a different legal
standard than the rest of the world.

Please explain how a teacher screwing a 18 year old is somehow worse than you doing it.

I agree with you on the fact of making separate laws for people but I don't agree that an educator should just lose their job and for that fact anyone who'd prey on a child/teen should be punished..
I know I had no sense of direction when I was 16-17 YO and at 18 I made the decision to join the army and even there there were rules about who you could fraternize with and consequences if you disobeyed those rules

Theres no doubt that teenagers cant be manipulative but the adult needs to be an adult because all the responsibility of what happens fall on them as well as the consequences
