I woke up to the sound of car doors slamming at 11:30. Car backing out my driveway and is gone before I get a good look. I arm myself and check my vehicles. All is normal and then here he comes back. Says "That was me in your driveway and I just wanted to know if you have any cornbread left." I don't remember exactly what I told him but he heard and understood very well and left. Then he drives back by. Call PD. Then the guy drives back by. PD shows up and finds the guy parked down the road about 500 yards. They talk to him and let him go. He told the cop he was looking for some guy and provided a name....not looking for cornbread after all I reckon. Cop says the guy is a known thief casing places to burglarize. I hope he comes back before daylight.

Time for motion lights and cameras.
You want to make it apparent to him that your house is a bad idea.

Wiley you should have cut him some cornbread. Filled it with XLAX . Then served it and made him eat it in front of you while holding your twelve gauge. Hold him there till he's about to explode then kick him out and shoot your shotgun in the air as he leaves.

Need to keep aware of surroundings. Just a suggestion - switch vehicles so they won't know if you are home or not, try not to drive the same one all the time. Change your schedule, drive away then come back 10 minutes later. Do this several times a day at random intervals. Drive away, park in woods close by and walk in unobserved through the back. Leave, go to a neighbor, borrow his vehicle, then drive by your place in about fifteen minutes from a different direction from which you usually come in. Look for a vehicle parked away from your place with a view that could notify some one you are returning. When you do have to go somewhere have some one stop by and check your place. Bad guys figure out quickly they can't set up a safe way to pattern your coming and going so move on.

I hate when people come up my driveway. They are generally met by me holding a shotgun unless ithe purpose is obvious. Be careful.

8X12 foot gate, lights, and camera...no one drives up my driveway without prior permission. Best move I ever made.

Yep I had an incident similar to this not long ago at all.
The guy noticed my garage door was up and wheeled into my drive which is pretty long.
He didn't notice my driveway alarm but was up to my house before I could get outside and was in my garage when I came out.
He was completely surprised and asked if I any work he could do that he needed to get $16.20 to pay a bill...total BS.
I told him I didn't have work or money and that I was retired and at home all the time.

Just as a tip for the future... If the police know who it is always try and get the weasel's name from them. They'll be easy to find by word of mouth on the street if he's a petty thief. This isn't a pro acting like that he'll be well known.

I'll say this... doesn't matter how much money you've got in your pocket or how white bread your neighborhood is... always good to have a couple shady acquaintances for this line of work.

I used to think this about the lights till my boat was stolen from underneath my carport with flood lights on. I think it made it easier for them to see what they were doing.
While we were in the bed.

I like the lights off, no one knows my turf like I do, in the dark I am at an advantage imo.

I guess you checked to see what he was up to?

My neighbors hear shooting often coming from my land, my driveway is 200 yards long, I have motion lights all around, and I have a fairly large dog lurking around the shadows of my yard that sets off those lights a few times every night. I also have a trail camera high in a tree along my drive way that points toward the drivers seat of vehicles coming up toward my home.

So far the trail camera has caught nothing suspicious. I think that has something to do with the commonplace gunshots, the long drive, motion lights, dogs, and a couple of my neighbors may or may not think I'm a little crazy to start with.

Not trying to sound too "tinfoil hat" here, but a decent FLIR doesn't have to cost you your inheritance anymore. So I got one. You can quickly scan your property in secret for anything warm blooded, and an 870 with a light mounted to it makes a good companion.

I caught the neighbor's kid letting the air out of one of my tires one night, just being a kid. I never pulled on him, I just walked up right behind him and spoke. He was more than happy to go home and get his dad's portable air tank to fix me back up. He's actually a good kid and we speak and wave when we see each other.

I'll bet his britches stunk when he went to get the tank.

Said he thought I had leftover cornbread. The blinding tactical light on the end of the Mossberg 590 from 20 feet away and me telling him he was a lying nogoodmethheadsonofabitch sent him pretty quick to where he parked 500 yards down the road. He was on the county road when this took place. If I'd caught him like this in my driveway it would have been different. I wish, now, that I had walked the 500 yards down there and shook him up for real.

Knocking on our door anytime awakens our beast German Shepherd. Man the bark on that dog scares me when the door gets knocked on. When I come to the door any stranger is standing back off the porch watching the nose of the dog as it tries to get around my legs and eat them. "Sorry we don't want any" is usually all it takes for peddlers to keep moving.

Had a local black crack lady knock on my door at 3 one morning. Saw who it was before I opened door. Cracked it just enough for her see shotgun and tell her she better get running. It was almost funny. Ahole and elbows was all I saw when she took off

I didn't take time to do that yet as I was limited on time to get my motion lights all up and running. Tomorrow I'll check the camera.

On a side note, 2 people were shot about a mile from me this evening. Maybe it was thugs and not upstanding citizens.
