Well, been wanting some backyard chickens for a while. Me and the wife took the plunge today. Bought 6 barred rocks. They are living in the tub in our guest bathroom for now.

Any tips or pointers I need to know about?

Thanks

The most important thing is that they have to stay warm. Keep a heat lamp on them. They need to be able to get under it, or away from it. Put their feet against your face to tell if they're cold. If their feet feel cold against your face, then they aren't warm enough. About 90 degrees is optimal temp for day old baby chicks. They don't start producing their own body heat for several weeks.

I got a bunch of chicks a few weeks ago. They're doing really good. Its pretty easy just make sure they have easy access to food and water. I've been feeding them an organic chicken starter and they are growing like Crazy. Check out back yard chickens. Its agood forum. Just take into consideration that half of the chicks will probably be roosters so you might end up with 2 or 3 hens if they straight run chicks. If you get more go ahead and get them so the new chicks won't get picked on really bad. Size matters. I've moved my chicks to the roost room of my coop. I put a heat lamp inside a terracotta pot in a corner of the roost to keep them warm .I leaned half of a piece of sheet rock up against the wall with the heat lamp/pot under it . Just make sure they can get away from the heat source to cool down when needed.

Yep, got the heat lamp and thermometer underneath said 95 degrees. Also got the waterer and 7 lb feeder. Figured no need getting the little one.

Yes, we got straight run so hopefully we don't have too many roosters. Tractor supply had some terra browns(i think) that were a little older, buy one get one free. And they were all females. Wife wanted the "speckly" ones so that is how we ended up with the rocks

I got 3 of those tetra browns the other day from tractor supply in Chelsea to add more guaranteed hens to my flock.the rest are production road island reds. The tetra browns were labeled as solid black chickens with black eggs but I've yet to find a pic of one black tetra brown....other than the pic in the store. We prolly got the same run of chicks.

Also thought about a slick bath tub bottom. Make sure their feet aren't sliding out from under them when they try to run around. It'll hurt their femur head joint. Can cause serious problems for the ones that get hurt.

Also remember to wash your hands really good anytime you handle them. My wife caught salmonella when we had chicks due to poor hand washing. She was sick for 2-3 days with vomiting and diarrhea.

If they are standing really close together then they are probably not warm enough. And if they are hassling like dogs they are too hot. You don't need a heat lamp. A 75-100 watt bulb works fine. No need to spend the extra money on a "heat lamp"

Hand washing tip is excellent! Those chicks are not too hard to raise as long as you keep them warm, fed and watered. Best of luck with them! I enjoy my hens very much but me and that Black Rooster are having some issues....

As already stated...keep them warm, including from drafts, and make sure they have sure traction when up and walking around. They'll find their own comfort zone under the light. Cactus buck is right on, about the handwashing, too.

Maggie, what kind of roo is it, that's giving you problems? Our birds are all Black Australorp, and our rooster is probably the tamest of the lot. None of them are real big on being close to people, unless they're out of food and you're there to fill the feeders, and being petted is just out of the question, to them, but the rooster is calm and less shy than the hens.

When I was 5 or 6, my grandmother kept a garden rake by the back door of her house...if you went outside, that rake had better be the first thing you were reaching for, because that huge Rhode Island Red rooster of hers was on his way!

The Roo is a BIG Black Australorp named Sugar Ray. He did not start out being aggressive and it only happens sometimes...not sure what triggers his behavior. My hens are Black Australorp-2, Rhode Island White-3, Rhode Island Red-1 [lost one egg bound], Bard Rock [2-lost one to a red tail hawk], Brown Leg Horn [2-lost one egg bound] and Amberlink-3. The Brown Leg Horn Roo I had before got his walking papers...he became so aggressive I was worried about losing an eye!! Mean little snot he was.

I keep a big yellow plastic bat at the coop and always take it with me just in case.... laugh

Spittin' image of our roo. Ours ever starts being aggressive, he likely won't see the sun set...I won't tolerate it.

The big Red my grandmother had met his end one day when my grandfather stepped outside...the rooster ran at him and jumped, but as he brought his spur to bear, Grandpa grabbed by the feet and bounced that noggin off the concrete steps! Chicken stew for dinner, that night! *LOL*

worst one I have is a little Golden Seabright rooster, meaner than all hail. Turn yer back and he's coming. His days are numbered.

I've got 18 or so hens and four roosters, rarely have a fight and none of those are aggressive. Big Rhode Island Red my wife pets and hand feeds.

I agree with grandpa...once that bad behavior starts it just gets worse. Sugar Ray is not NEAR as bad as Big Ed, the Brown Leg Horn..that arse truly attacked me. Another shot to show just how stinking big he is compared to the hens...
