My Honda Rincon 680 has got hot and shut off before. I've got a really heavy duty disk and I add two locomotive knuckles to it. I don't think anything smaller would stand up to the abuse. And I still want your 4wheeler

Ask them if they ever pulled a disk with it. You can really over heat one doing that. If they say no, that's a plus. Unless its water-cooled like my Yamaha 700. The temp gauge never goes up and dragging a plow or drag does not seem to concern it. Engine heat is the least of your concerns. Pulling farm equipment causes excessive transmission wear, bearings, bushings, axle gears, and even frame damage. I've seen it all. I've welded and straightened frames for folks who pull a disk with their ATV. The fact is they aren't built for that. None of them.

Honda fourtrax 300 or foreman 450 are hard to beat. I have a 1995 Honda Fourtrax 300. I think it would take a round from a 50 BMG and still keep going. Tough as hell but also tough on my back if I'm riding for long periods. Better ride is why I got a Polaris Ranger this past season but you can't beat those older Hondas for reliability.

OK,I'm starting to look for a used ATV for this falls season. I've seen some 2001-2005 on CL for $2500 (+/- 500) and seen some 2011-2015 for $5500 +/-. I don't want a racer, just something to go down a road or fire break and haul a deer if I have to. Are the older models ok? I don't need power steering and shucks like that, but I hate to not fork over another couple grand for something newer if it's really that much better. Thoughts? It sounds like you are not planning on using it much so I think a good used one would fit the bill. And even if you don't think you will ever need 4 wheel drive, I would still recommend getting one that has it.

Dont have to have power steering just make sure you can shift in and out of 4x4. full time 4x4 is hard on rider and hard on atv X2 Yep. I put the 2x4 disconnect on my Rancher. MUCH easier to steer when I don't need 4 wheel drive. If I were looking to buy one now it would definitely have a selector for 2 or 4 wheel drive.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. I've had several 300's over the years, they are great machines with in my eyes only 2 design flaws.
#1. The front hub seals are junk and let water/mud in easily running the wheel bearings and brakes.
#2. The seat sits a lot lower than a 450 making your knees be at a direct right angle. 450 is much more comfortable. YEP - they were very tough on brake pads if you rode in water any at all.
