[quote=turkey247]I thought I'd get blasted in the "other" thread if I commented anymore. But life is way too short to wait 2 or 3 years for a mount[quote=turkey247]

I agree. There's a difference. I don't expect to wait two years for a shoulder mount of a deer. I understand sometimes it takes longer than expected but that's just insane.

Yea i waited a little over a year once on the biggest deer I've killed. I went and got him and took him to my cousin who was a taxidermist and 6 mos latter i had my mount. I can understand a year to 18 mos but I'm not waiting longer.

Would walk over a naked woman to get to a gobblin turkey!

Exactly how long do some of y'all think it actually takes to mount a deer?

Total hours involved?

A buddy and I took 2 turkeys to a taxidermist one time and it was over 3 years before we got them back after lots of visiting to see what was up. Wasn't long after my buddy found out that the guy had a freezer go out that our turkeys were in and ruined everything!! We are thinking he probably had to kill some turkeys to make up ours!!

You want a figure that includes drying and soaking time or just the time that you actually spend working on the deer, which would include caping it out, tanning the hide, etc. My Dad is taxidermist and the key is to have several mounts at various stages throughout the shop. He can easily produce two completed per day when his system is running efficiently. Of course, like most guys that do this line of work, also enjoy hunting too.

You more or less made my point for me.

Some folks tend to believe it takes 40+ hours of hands on time to do a simple shoulder mount.

It doesn't matter how many hours are involved, from the first moment he touches a scalpel to that deer, it will take at least a month from start to finish. That is if he has no other deer to work on and he does his own tanning. If the taxi sends all of his capes to a commercial tannery then he may not even get your cape back for 1 to 3 months, plus he's not gonna send it to the tannery until he has 20 or so capes to send. If he does his own tanning then the taxidermist may skin your head out and wait a week or two until he has 15 or 20 to flesh, tan, and thin, which is gonna take at least a week in itself. That's a week where he won't be able to mount any deer, then he gets to mount some deer for a week or two, then those heads have to dry for 3 weeks while he grooms them and makes sure no problems are popping up. While these are drying, he may mount a few more deer or do some tanning. Then he has to do the finish work to all of them which is gonna take another week or two. All of this is happening while customers drop off more deer and each one is gonna stay for at least 30 minutes and talk about what they want, and he has to break loose for an hour or so and measure the head, skin it out, and freeze it. On top of all that he also has people picking mounts up that stay and talk for 30 minutes or so and folks calling and asking when their deer is gonna be done. I bet that after customer interaction, a taxi gets to actually work on mounts for 4 or 5 hours each day. It's easy to see how their work can get piled up and why it takes a year or more to get your head back. When deer season starts, the taxidermist may just be finishing up the last head from the season before, or he may still have some he hasn't finished yet. but no, it shouldn't take 3 years to get a deer head back. I would have gone up there a year and a half ago.
