I'd probably buy a bunch of wheat. It's cheap and will sprout quick. There's always fescue but it's a bit more pricey, May last longer though.

I plant Pensacola Bahia on roads when we build one. Good root system that establishes quickly and it is tough grass. You could put a little ryegrass or something with it till it gets warmer, I like to cover fresh seeds with a little hay, especially on the berms and turnouts.

Browntop millet works well for erosion control and the turkeys love it. Cheap too, about $23/50lb bag.

What would be a good seed for planting on shaded roads? Like through a pine plantation?

I know #57 stone would be best, but I was hoping for something cheaper...

$155 plus shipping for a mixture of bahia, bermuda and browntop millet, I don't think so.

Dang that's high. I bought some a year or two ago for some roads and I think it was less than $50 or somewhere there abouts. Bermuda was the one that was crazy expensive when I checked.

I have not bought any bahia seed in a couple of years, so I just called the local Ace store I use and they said $246 per 50 pound bag. Dang stuff has GONE UP in price. Last I bought was about $55 a bag.

Bashing me for posting something before you even know the cost... seems logical! The man asked a question and I gave him an answer. I worked in erosion control for 6yrs while in school doing hydoseeding and just seeding then blowing straw on top all around central Al. I have a little knowledge as to what to plant and that will provide temp and permanent grass. I cant help that it is costly to have permanent grass.

All grass seed has just about doubled in the last 2 years it seems. I planted 3 acres in Argentine Bahia a year ago and bought it for $109.99 per 50lbs. Just ordered seed to plant 2 more acres and the same seed ha gone to $187.99 a bag.

By the way, if there is a place cheaper than Hancock Seed like posted above I haven't found it. My local feed store wanted $385/50lbs argentine Bahia. They have great prices even with shipping
