Ok guys! Good to see y'all! Throw a team name in the hat and we'll figure it out in a few days. Where y'all gonna be hunting? I'll be in Bullock, Macon, Butler, and Lowndes.

First season trying this so not sure what I'm doing... but I get in the woods a lot when family is healthly. smile

I'll be in Jackson County mainly, trip to El Dorado TX and possibly trip to FL pending on what happens in life

And I haven't been out listening but I've been checking cameras every weekend on a new place for past 5 weeks trying to figure out what/where/when birds are using and found a pile of hens... bound to be a gobbler or two amongst them the next time I check (3/11/17 to be exact)

Sorry to be "that guy", I read the rules but gotta admit I'm still struggling on the details. Do we post up all our kills in this thread and someone keeps a tally that's reported to someone who's keep overall team scores? Do birds have to be Easterns only or best scores from total of 3 birds regardless of how many we kill?... and my name's Kyle btw

I'm here. I'll be mainly be hunting Coosa County and possibly Washington if I can make a trip down there. I'm also supposed to be taking a trip to FL.

I've done alittle scouting. Seen a group with 3 longbeards in it last weekend so hopefully they stay in the same place.

NE, there is a seperate post to enter the birds in the contest. You either have to be in pic or have something with team name written on it in pic and then submit the score you get off the NWTF website from bird's measurements. Of course we'll be happy to see them also so you can post the pics here also.

your three highest bird scores will be counted. So if you kill a a bird that scores higher than any of your other 3 entered then the new bird will replace lowest scoring bird

This. Of course once the season starts, you will see how folks post their birds and score so you will get the hang of it. Yekrut will update board weekly or thereabouts.

Definitely post share your pics here and let the team enjoy your success. Also if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. I hope everyone will participate but don't take it to serious this is all in good fun.

Looks like they are still grouped up good powpow. You get in on them early and catch them on their winter pattern.

I'm just rambling here... Don't care what name is as long as we post some kills!

I'll throw Thunder Chicken Chokers in there. All sound good to me. I'm so ready to get back in the woods, I was trying to find a kid to take but we don't really know any in that age range. Little man is still a few years away but he would love to go!

Could care less about the name but here's few more for the hat:

"Jake Stoppers"
"Flock Busters"
"Turkey Terrors"
"Missed Again"
"Belly Crawlers"
"Paintbrush pluckers"
"Seasonal Insomniacs" --- it's already started for me, haven't slept a good night since the 9th when last checked cameras and looked for sign, I've got a problem that hunting 45 days of season won't fix.

And another thing, I'm assuming it's only birds I pull the trigger on? I go with a lot of folks to play caller for them and usually let them pull the trigger unless shot just doesn't allow.

Yes only enter birds that you pull the trigger on but you can post the birds you had a hand in killing on this thread. I agree 45 days ain't enough that's why I hit Northern states in May.

Heard one this morning in Macon county. Started at 630 when I blew my Houndstooth hooter at him. 1st gobble of the year and man did I get chills! I owled a few more times just to listen to him and eased back to the truck and was gone by 645. Putting him on ice for later this week, God willing!

Weather is going to be cold but I'm hoping the wind won't be blowing to hard with clear Sky's. I don't expect to hear much gobbling this week but you never know. The plan is to get in a good listening spot and hopefully hear one open up. If not atleast we should be able to see a lot of tracks in green fields and roads so I will be patient and wait one out in a heavy traveled area and let out a few yelps ever once in a while in hopes one shows up.

Good luck fellers! I'm not near as upset about not being able to go in the morning as I would have been if it was 20 degrees warmer

I could've spit on a cpl hens around 830 but nobody talking through 1130AM when I threw in the towel this morning. Coldest I ever been on turkey hunt and first time hunting them while sleeting. Try again tom.

If I can get photobucket to work then I'll upload some pics. It wasn't a real exciting hunt until they were in front of me trying to attack decoys. They never gobbled. I had 3, all 2 yr olds, come in and make me watch them for 10 min b/c they wouldn't seperate out for me to get a shot on the strutter in the group.

He scored 58 points. Was 18lbs 12 ozs, 15/16 and 1 inch spurs, 9 15/16 beard.

I'm in same boat with TSS... 870 compact and #9's... I know it was easier to carry this morning than the 835 I've been hauling around for over 20yrs. Now, whether it's a comparable killing machine I have yet to prove. smile

My next o/u will be a Franchi. NEbama 870 in 9's is a deadly combo it throws better patterns than any of my other guns although I rarely take it.

Naw. I over thought things and went to my Bullock co. spot instead. They like to hang out in this little pasture and I could get in an old horse stall and stay a little warmer. I put some decoys out but only I heard 4 early gobbles waaaay off and never heard a peep afterwards. Pretty morning but no turkeys even close to me. I took all morning off last two days and will have to hunt my spot real close to office tomorrow because I gotta be in at 9. The saga continues...

Well I've been past 3 days and have 21 hrs in the woods so far and heard 4 gobbles from a bird that was within workable distance... and his hen let me have it and took him the opposite direction.

But with all that said, big event in our household yesterday afternoon as my wife finally connected on her first bird... a 15.5 lb, double bearded jake! She missed on opening day 4 yrs ago and only been back once since then because she was so mad at em. ha. No points for our team but I got meat in the freezer... I'll post a pic later.

You must have a pocket full of rabbits feet unless I'm misunderstanding your post! 1st time you've never killed on a hunt or firs time never hearing a gobble? I get skunked 80% of the time and probably don't hear a bird on 25% of my hunts.

First time turkey hunting ever. I did here a gobble @ 7 and heard him fly down, sounded like maybe 100-150 yards away so I set and tried calling but I guess he went the other way. then on the way out around 10 on the other side of the river one gobbled twice so I drive over there and no luck. Was it likely the same bird? I'm still new I wasn't sure how they were about flying over water. I've only seen them fly when spooked or roosting.

Turkey will go wherever he wants. Could be same bird could not. Keep up after them. Remember call sparringly and be patient.

Powpow, its exactly like buckbrush said. Turkey gonna go where he wants to go. That's one thing I learned about my turkeys over time. Just pay attention to where they seem to go when they don't cooperate. You'll start seeing a pattern and it'll help in picking setup locations.

I should've paid more attention to weather. Thought rain was coming in later today. It run me in a pop up blind a club member put up on a clover patch. If i knew i was going to be hunting out of a blind i wouldve went to a different spot

I didn't hear the first gobble today. Almost went up to DeKalb county this morning, couldn't have done any worse. So I have a question that may be stupid but oh well. If I am close to a roosted Tom (within hearing distance) will they always gobble before or right after flying down? And how often do the roost in the same area? Sorry if the questions are a little elementary but I'm just don't know haha

Most birds don't gobble. For everyone that's gobbling out there alot more are staying silent. This can be from competition where they don't want to get their butt kicked from a dominant bird or more likely a band of disgruntle Jake's. Many many more reasons but to answer your question no a Gobbler will not always gobble on roost or on the ground.

Where a Gobbler roosts depends really on the bird and how much pressure is put on him or where his hens are roosting. Some birds are very predictable where they roost others roost just where they are at the point it's getting dark. Terrain also has alot to do with it.

Dang yall, I'm about worthless this year. Other than my wife shooting that youngun Thursday afternoon, I can't get within 65 yds of a gobbler. Had one skirt me at 65 this afternoon and then came back by at same distance 30min later.... my mistake I put a friggin decoy out. I don't know why I use em. I try it once a yr and I always get one either hung or flared by em then I put back on the shelf. I was using one of those dakota jakes and this was obviously a 2yr old that had been whooped and didn't want to risk it with a partially strutting bird. I had a close call yesterday also but he had way to many hens. Oh well, maybe I can get after em later in the week but first time I've ever been able to get out and hunt the first 5 days of season so I'm blaming it on the weather... smile

NE, I use one of those jake decoys and haven't had one scared off b/c of it. I have figured out that they will circle and come up from behind it instead of face to face like they do a strutter. It cost me a turkey to figure that out. Sucker tried climbing in my lap while circling to come in behind that jake!

I plan to be back after them in the morning.

reeve - I can see that happening too but I was in some open woods off a road. I watched him work his way uphill on the road (it was almost too good to be true) and the second he stepped up on my bench and got line of sight and noticed the jake he literally turned and ran. I have a pack of 8 jakes running around (was 9 before my wife killed0 and they are probably working over some of the single gobblers so I think that's the main problem... the current environment opposed to the decoy itself. ha. I'm hoping to get back out Wednesday.

I hardly ever use decoys but when I do it's in fields. I've only tried them twice in woods and both times the birds spooked. One I had pitching in off his roost flew 100yds down a creek to me but as soon as he rounded a tree he saw my decoys and flared like a duck and landed 70 yds across the creek on the opposite ridge. All I could do was watch him walk over the hill.

buckbrush - That's now my experience on 2 of 3 times using decoys in woods. The other experience was a gobbler hung up one bench down and strutted over an hr back and forth in front of my lone hen decoy expecting her to go to him. That was a classic dead bird in my normal situations if he had popped that head up looking for her and met business end of an 835. After 20-something yrs, still making rookie mistakes.... that's should be my signature.

congrats on the kill! sounds like it was well deserved

I dropped the ball this morning. I missed one at 6:47 b/t 40-45 steps. If I didn't have the shot hull then I'd say dreamed that missed one. Never expected he would show up that early. Evidently I figured out the hard way that briars will mess your TSS pattern up. I shot through some of them and its the only way I can come up with him not flopping.

They are quiet today spooked the only bird that was gobbling thought he was a little further than he was now just trying to find one to play.

Thank you. It wasn't the best conditions wind blowing 15 to 20mph. I set up in a bottom in hopes of hearing something. Well 7:45 I haven't heard anything no flydowns no gobbling nothing. 8 o'clock I decide to do some aggressive cutting and he hammered about 300yds away I immediately thought about going after him to close the distance but held off to see what he was going to do. After about 10 mins I cut again and he triple gobbles and has closed the distance to about 200yds. I wait a little bit and do a few yelps he gobbles then I cut and he double gobbles so I go quiet. It isn't to long I start to hear drumming smile oh yeah. A few soft yelps and I see him step out 40 yds in full strut I let him close the distance to about 15yds Booooom. God is good to let me have days like today.

Man we had one roughly 40yds from my friend's gun barrel but dang thing wouldn't pop his head over the rock to see the hen he was worked up over... dang mountain turkeys. Then had another one come at us from up top but skirted on other side of hollar at 100yds gobbling and strutting his way down the mountain. One of those "about as close as u can get" mornings without pulling the trigger... hoping I can get out late this week.

About every time I close I eyes, I see a bird going into strutt... I got back the full-on case of turkey fever that will take until 2nd week of May to go dormant again.

Congrats Matt! I would kill 5 two yr olds a yr if they walked in range. It's nice to kill older birds at time but I don't have the kind of vision that can judge a pair of spurs before I shoot, if it ain't a jake, it'll eat. smile

congrats NE!!!

mine are playing hardheaded. we are playing switch-a-roo on roost spots and setups. one of these days they gonna mess up and be roosted where I need them to be!

I had to come in to work today but I'll be back at them with a vengeance in the morning!

Missed one today! Still kicking myself im pretty sure I shot over his head. Still an awesome experience to have one in the sights for the first time. And to call and get a response and all, not gonna lie I was breathing heavier than seeing a buck in the cross hairs. (Not a monster buck of course lol) can't wait to get back at it tomorrow. I went with my 78 year old aunt Barb today who has been turkey hunting for years and has been all over the country. Amazing lady, probably healthier than me and over twice my age. She has an awesome place in Collinsville I am blessed to be able to hunt deer and turkey.

Yes it's best 3 birds. If you kill a better one just post it and Mark replace with lowest bird. Congrats PowPow your ahead of the game just starting out. Just a matter of time before you get one.

Had birds gobbling good but all off property. One was in a bottom just off property line next to a gasline. While aiting for him to fly down, i hear some commotion from his direction and then see a turkey fly across the gasline. 10 min later i see the property neighbor walk out on gasline. I'm hoping neighbor didnt spook the gobbler to bad and he'll will swing around and pay a visit.

Bird gobble at 5:43 this morning.

Saw one fanned out 300 yards away about 8am. Maybe 100 yards up from where I missed yesterday afternoon. Idk if it was the same one or not. By the time we got close enough he had followed hens into the woods I guess. done some soft yelps and pretty sure the same hen was there responding to yelps just like yesterday she came out but didn't stay long possibly because no decoys set up. Anyway couldn't get him out this time. Back at it this afternoon, trying out a funky chicken decoy. Y'all ever used one?

Group of 4 Jake's and 2 hens came out and decided they didn't care for the funky chicken haha not sure where boss gobbler is or his reaction. May leave this one alone until I get some more experience

Powpow you need that first bird then save the fan so you can fan them Gobblers that are henned up in a field. smile. NEbamahunter I shoot everyone I see called up the two Gobblers 20 mins later not 100 yds away old birds never seem to care. Did that last year but killed the bird that time.

Pow - Again, not being a fan of decoys I can't speak from experience but I hear luck could change any day. Try a single hen if you haven't gone that route. I can tell u how to call one up a hollar and in between benches in hills/mountiains... but fields with decoys, well, I'm still a relative newbie even after 20+ yrs turkey hunting experience. ha

I think I'm putting the decoys away for a while and see if my luck changes, I actually called one in off the roost this morning and he stopped right at the opening for about 3 seconds turned around and walked away after seeing the decoy and wouldn't talk to me anymore. I could have got him and should have, I guess I was expecting him to come on in a little further. So I'm thinking if my decoy wouldn't have been there he would have kept coming, or if it was further away idk. It was an amazing experience, but it sucks leaning the hard way lol. Lots of gobbling in the woods this morning. So if I go back and he is in the area tomorrow do I need a different call to sound like a different hen? That dude wouldn't shut up before he got to me but the minute he turned he wouldn't respond to me anymore. He was still gobbling occasionally but not at my call.

not being there with you hard to say obviously but sounds like you had him on the right day and you were doing things right. If it was me, I'd do similar thing nxt time but I'd shut up earlier and let him come in wondering if you had walked away on him... hardest thing to do is not answer a gobbling bird, even for experienced hunters. Just because he's answering doesn't mean he's coming... but sometimes it does. Dang birds will make u crazy!

powpow, what kind of decoys do you have? when i first started i had a few similar experiences. birds would be real reluctant to come on in once they got so close to decoys. now i use avianx hens and a dakota decoys jake and haven't had one spook off from them. i'm sure its going to happen eventually but it hasn't yet.

Got my butt whooped the last two days had turkeys all around me but I was always facing the wrong direction. Very very frustrating. I will be back after them after a few days working.

I'm glad it's raining I need a little break. I think I broke rule #1-5 this week. I just made to many rookie mistakes. Them dang turkeys bring out the worst in you sometimes.

I have the cheapest ones from bass pro that don't come in a box. I used the funky chicken once not my decoy just borrowed it. There was a noticeable difference in color between it and the ones I have

I went out for a little while this morning. Didn't hear a gobble till 7 and he sounded like he was a mile away. Had a hen come by clucking and purring. First time I've heard the purr. Then the bottom fell out haha. I was surprised to see one in the middle of the road on the way out, it was like a dang monsoon out there.

Well I followed a bird yesterday down in a bottom for 5 hrs. They are henned up pretty bad. Finally was able to get in front of him and he disappeared. Pretty sure I didn't bump him. Been a rough go these two weeks.

I heard two gobs Monday morning and should've killed one of them but he didn't have a beard and I was hoping the mature bird was somewhere behind him. Didn't happen. Skipped yesterday and went back in today and didn't hear a peep. I mean nothing even far off. To my dismay, the timber guys have moved yestersay in with a loader and 2 skidders so that end of the property is probably toast. Sorry guys. I'm trying!!

This will be my second time hunting in Nebraska and have hunted Missouri many many times. If you want a merriam NW Nebraska is your best bet Rio's are pretty much everywhere central to West and Easterns to the east. Birds gobble alot but you better get in tight off roost or they will be gone as soon as their feet hit the ground.

Score 67.75
1" 1/4 spurs
11" beard

I was dang happy with this bird he had given me the slip three other times. Everytime he would fly into the bottom with hens and one time he spooked off the roost at over 100yds very frustrating. Got lucky and caught him with no hens first thing that morning and he was a gobbling fool but didn't want to commit. It took some aggressive calling and some leave scratching to make him mess up.

Having a buddy with you helps alot. Lol. But get low when taking the pic and take a lot of pics at different angles. I also like laying the bird on my knee I think it really brings out the birds feathers. This was one of the best looking draws I have ever seen and with a light fog along with the green up really was a sight to see. Side note first couple of pics we took we were so jacked up from the turkey show this guy was putting on they were very very blurry from shaky hands. smile That's what it's all about tho.

Another lesson learned last week. To make a long story short I was already running late so I rushed into some hardwoods to get a stubborn gobbler. His last gobble sounded like he was going away from me so I tried to get a little closer and as soon as I stood up he flies off, probably 40 yards away. So I go home with no bird and still catch hell from the wife for being late. Back at it this weekend Coosa county in the morning and DeKalb on Saturday. My dad sent me a pic from his camera for a little added motivation. Would love for this to be my first.

Well I got another one Friday (no upgrade though, 2 yr old) and had a quiet one play a little yesterday before rain showed up. He was coming in clucking up a storm to locate us... told my cousin to get his gun ready then wouldn't u know, driving rain and thunder started basically put of nowhere and he never showed. Im assuming smart old bird or 2yr old that's been whooped the way he didn't gobble other than about 4 times when he was several hundred yds away. Hope to get him one before season over but running out of time.... also hoping to finish in AL for first time ever.

And btw, call it overconfidence or just "always prepared" but I keep a retractable cloth ruler in my vest at all times... doesn't help with weight but I can always check mine or tell folks their beard and spur measurements ha

Had one at 35yrs with safety off that gobbled a couple of times then clucked and purred his way into me. I almost squeezed off then realized he had a jake beard. Woods are too overgrown to see if he had spurs so I let him walk away. I scratched him back in (and he gave out another healthy gobble) and I couldn't tell if he was mature bird with beard rot or jake (his head looked mature but some of those "older jakes" don't look much different than a younger 2yr old IMO)... but in hindsight, wish I had just ground checked now because I'd be done and could sleep this weekend. smile

I've had 3 Jake's the past week come in gobbling then when they couldn't find me start clucking purring and yelping. One of them had a 4 to 5 inch beard. Yours most likely was a Jake glad you let him pass. I think them Jake's are starting to figure things out after hearing the big boys.

I smashed one like that in Autauga county several years ago. Gobbled like a man and his read head popped over a little rise about 20 yards away. I fed him some Winchester #5's at 1200fps. Had a 4 inch beard. I was kinda ticked but he still ate good!

Got that right bamaeyedoc. Some have to pay for acting like the big boys. I almost pulled the trigger on the 5 inch beard only thing tat saved him was his buddy behind him with a 2" beard. I hesitated then they started yelping and clucking. Out west Rio hunting is very difficult Jake's seem to gobble more than the gobblers at times.

I wasn't the trigger man but he was dead at 8 o'clock. They didn't gobble till the sun came out about 7 o clock. Had to put the creep on him gobbling in a clear cut above our heads at 20 yds. Put a decoy out right in front of us laying on our bellies. A few soft calls and he peaked over at 10yds Bang Flop.

Thought I was done today. Had one just around bend near top of mtn in a hollar. Got lucky on approach and had setup so that he'd show his head at 30yds from me. Gobbled good for it to be late morning. Clicked my safety off twice thinking he was just about to show... then silent. Waiting 45min then backed out just in case he had gone quiet and I couldn't out patience him. Not sure if he had hens or just got tired of waiting for me to show... or was still there waiting when I headed back. Hoping to go tomorrow if I can get pass from wife, she's DONE with this season ha

Yeah my wife is past done. Did some yard work these past two days to get some last minute brownie points. Heading out for MO and NE Monday afternoon. Hopefully will hunt 2 or 3 days in Missouri and then a week in Nebraska. Calling for snow Sunday in NE but the rest of the extended forecast is between 40's and 70's with clear Sky's so we might hit it just right.

I hate to think of the honeydo's I would have to complete in order to get a full week of hunting out of state. Couple days of yard work? Sounds like you got a good one!

Hey guys! Got one for the team yesterday! Story and pics to come but he's a good 3 year old! I'll give you a little teaser to the story: He gobbled at 530am and I killed him at 500pm! Helluva day!

Guys if we can post another couple of birds in addition to the one I got, we may have a shot for top 3 in the contest if no one else gets too lucky. That'd be pretty cool!

I hate that I haven't been able to add any points guys. Had some family stuff come up that really limited the last 2 weekends. I see Tn and Ga seasons go through next weekend. If I was to get a couple of days to sneak away y'all have any suggestions on where to go in either place?

Wooohhooo got us an upgrade bird. 70+ points triple beard. Believe I'm going to mount him. I'll figure up points and post pics later.

I think they all mix a little in that area I've killed what I call a merriam just a few miles from there and I've killed Rio's.
