I'm good with HookHangers.

And yes I'm still in grad school. Luckily my place is just right down the road from Auburn. I won't be able to go every day like some of these guys but I think I'll be able to go twice a week probably. Looking forward to it!

Same to you. Hopefully it'll be a good season for us with a lot of gobbling birds.

Getting ready for tomorrow.

Faith, my daughter shot the Super Bantam 20ga. With the TSS this evening.

We collected 540.6 grains out of 575 grains for 94.01% recovery of the shot.

181 in 10" @ 41 yards.

Dead Turkey!

Good morning.

Gobbler was about 250 yards with hens, but never came in.

We called in four hens, that stayed with us until 9:00.

Got some decent video, I'll have to piece together later.

Had some help. Goober and Henrietta are the two turkeys closet to me.

Hey guys I'm good with the name.

Glad to be back on a team with you Mr. David.

Had a tough youth hunt today. Standing in my listening spot with my friend & his kid & I heard a twig break & there was a gobbler not 20 yards from us. Never heard him fly down or anything. I'm calling him Ninja!

Needless to say we didn't get a shot. grin

Heard one gobble 1 time way off. Went to him but no luck. Came to another spot & got on a spur with a lot of sign. Thought a bird would be down in the bottom out of the wind so we sat down & one hammered at my first call.

Gobbled again about 10 minutes later closer & then hung up about 80 yards. I couldn't see him but my buddy could. So I backed up & called & he hammered & I could hear him walking. Then I could hear him spitting & drumming. Then I realized he turned & came up the spur next to us. grin

He eased on off but his days are numbered. It was good to get a little action & see a good show.

Jdfarm what ya majoring in? I've got a freshman down there & another one coming in the fall. I have a few connections down there. Lemme see if I can get you somewhere close to hunt. You might have to call up a bird for an old timer or 2, but you ll also probably be golden if you do. thumbup

Haha that sounds like turkey hunting to me. More often than not they win, at least when I'm hunting em. But it makes it that much more special when you kill one.

Graduated in 2014 with a Biomedical Sciences degree from Auburn and I'm in my second year of pharmacy school now. It's a good place, I'm sure your kids will enjoy it. If they ever need anything just let me know. And I'm always game for hunting a new place. I'll be doing most of my hunting in Russell county this season. Got a bunch of family land about 30 minutes outside of auburn. Should be able to hunt and get back in time for class a lot of mornings. Just have to kill the birds before the rest of my family does. We've got some killers hunting our place.

Gonna have to wear bibs & long johns Wednesday morning, but a bad day turkey hunting beats a good day at work!

No doubt about that. This week is our spring break, which is about the only time I can work until summer. I'm gonna try to work the early part of the week and hunt Friday-Sunday

I'll see what I can do for you a close spot.

My first one is Pre-Communication Disorders & the second one is leaning Chemistry Education but she hasn't ruled out Pharmacy. She's taking pharmacy in high school now & likes it, but she feels like she wants to teach.

Bibs, boot covers, under armour, neck gaiter, mittens, boggin, sidekick got the buddy heater, so I reckon I'm ready. If we get in a run n gun situation it's gonna be more like waddle n whack em. grin

Yep,

I picked up the 1000 gram Burleys to put by the door, and almost pulled a muscle as they were so heavy. Only had them on once for deer season, and here it is Spring time and I'm needing them.

Won't be too much walking tomorrow.

Well I'm the only guy in camp. One other guy on the way. Looks like we'll have to fight over the whole 12,000 acres in the morning! grin

*Face in hands*

I missed. Wide open, too hurried, didn't take time, heart in mouth, excited, stupid mistakes, MISS!

It's in writing, and hopefully over for several seasons, or never again.

Would have been the first bird killed using TSS and the 20ga.

Think I'm going back to the 12ga M2....

Nahh,

Going back after them.

God Bless,
David B.

Happens to the best of us. Bird circled behind me off roost this morning. Finally caught up to another group & couldn't get close enough. Circled em twice & never could get em close enough. Had one at 20 yards but couldn't shoot him. They just ain't ready.

I hate that for you Mr. David. I know that feeling all too well. I've missed my fair share. I'm headed to my place now, gonna try and break the ice for us this morning. Truck says 25 but at least it's calm and clear

Hate that for you BOFF. I missed more my first season than I care to admit. Now that I have better equipment, I can't get on the birds! figures.

Part of the issue was using a different gun, but the main issue was me not finishing up. Everything else till the closing went perfect....

Worked with a gobbler in a long field this evening.

I'm not positive he was by himself, as I couldn't get to see very well without taking a chance of being seen.

Going after him in the morning.

Steady drizzle in St. Clair county this morning. Good luck everybody. Got a 67 point bird leading in our 5th annual turkey tournament at Majestic Outdoors. Gonna take a stud or 2nd bird to knock him off the top spot.

Didn't go today.

I had a turkey I had a long history with, I called in to 50 yards with my buddy, and he was steadily coming in, until 3 does got downwind in between us and the turkey, and did the snort stomp your feet dance, in which the turkey didn't like and left.

Never killed that bird.

Nothing worse than that! Except maybe the time I had a STUD of a gobbler working towards me, about 50 yards away in some hardwoods, and a pack of about a dozen jakes came running in to my calls and started fighting amongst themselves. The lone gobbler hightailed it out of there and the Jakes fought in front of me for the next 5 minutes. Pissed me off real good!

Congrats BuckCommander!

And BOFF, those 2 have pretty strong beards for a couple of jakes! Woulda been easy to mess up if one was strutting and gobbling. Those 2 jokers should be fun birds to hunt next year though.

Fan wasn't full though.

Only the Jake with the beard sticking perpendicular to his chest was strutting.

Mr. David,

I've decided a few things about you. First thing is that you're pretty rough on the turkeys. Second thing is that you've got a pretty good place to hunt. Are you this rough on em every year? 3 birds in 10 days is very strong. Congrats again!

Good luck TreeHanger! I just saw the post where you said one if your kids was considering pharmacy. Great profession, especially for a woman. Good money and extremely flexible hours for once they start having kids and all that. Can work as little or as much as you want to. nothing wrong with teaching either though!

I came close to getting #2 Wednesday morning. Called the hen in and a Jake followed her but couldn't get the strutters to come. Won't be able to go any this weekend.

Hey Tree Hanger!!

Make sure you stay away from those two guys strep and flu. I hear they will put a hunting on a fellow at turkey season.

Boys our birds just aren't cranked up. Got on 2 gobblers roosted together Saturday morning. Just blind luck I sat down near em. Didn't know they were there til they pitched. They fooled around on the back slope of the ridge & fed on off.

Not much better today, but I got with some birds & skirted em trying to cut em off. They better not go that way tomorrow or one may get thumped.

Well Im glad to see some of us are having some luck this season. For me this has been the worst season I've ever had. Ive herd 1 bird, and that was in Demopolis on the 3rd morning. All my south Mississippi spots have became a wash, and Im also fixing to press charges on a poacher/tresspasser.

Roll Tide!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is all...

Not able to hit the woods until 7:45-8:00 am.

Had 3 birds gobbling 8:30-10:30 this morning.

Not feeling great this morning and just not able to get where I needed to be.

Still great to hear some gobbling though.

Stick with it team.

It will happen and it will happen quickly, just when you aren't expecting it!

Well guys, I have come down with some kind of sickness as well and haven't been able to hunt much this week. Sucks, cause I've got some tests next week and probably won't be able to go much.

Hopefully I'll get to feeling to better and have he time to be able to get after em soon. I need to kill one more bird and this will have been my best all around deer/turkey hunting season.

It's that time of the year. The last few days of March and the first 10 days of April are usually when the gobbling peaks for me it seems. Hope you find a loud, dumb one soon!

Boys I hunted 6 days & haven't gotten on a bird that wanted to play yet. Either they are done or not even ready to start. Gobblers still grouped up. Hens by them selves. Had a buddy at church this morning ask me if my year was going as bad as his. He's normally tagged out by now & has only killed 1 bird. It's crazy. slap

Congrats (again)! I'm gonna be getting back after them this weekend after a short hiatus due to sickness and school. Ready to go, but there's a few less birds and a few smarter birds out there since last time I went. Probably gonna make it a little tougher.

Still no luck here. Bird gobbled 1 time on limb this morning & pitched. Didn't study me the least bit. I'm beginning to think I might get skunked this year.

Congrats on #4 BOFF and on #1 Tree Hanger.

I have to admit that I joined BOFF in the swing and miss club this morning. I still can't figure out how I missed him. Perfect late morning bird. Gobbled at me around 0945 and I had him at 38-42 yards by 1000 just couldn't seal the deal.

I'm still not hearing much this year at all. That is only the 2nd gobble I've heard all season. I'm praying they will start talking more any day.

Reads like a good hunt, besides the miss Lumpy.

Hope they crank it up for you.

I haven't been able to go in the mornings at day break for a long while.

Might get to go Good Friday morning.

Keep at it!

Been busy all afternoon, Just getting around to posting the story. Not much to it. Our birds are just not doing anything. Gobble a little on the limb, maybe a little on the ground, absolutely non responsive to calling.

I finally got fed up and thought I might have some sort of a pattern figured out. I set up this morning with a strutter decoy hoping a bird would come in to strut with him. I've been seeing groups of gobblers all strutting together.

6 on the dot a bird gobbled above me, then one to the East, then one to the west. The east bird hit the ground and seemed to be working my way so I slid around the tree so I could see him coming. A few seconds later another bird to the west gobbled and he was close. I eased back around and caught a glimpse of him coming down the ridge.

Next thing I know a wad of gobblers topped the rise, saw my strutter and lined up nose to tail coming. They were all good birds so I was most definitely gonna shirt the first one in range.

I let em come on in and the lead bird stopped behind a small tree, and the second one passed him. He looked at me and didn't like what he saw. It's pretty wide open cutover area and I was against the only small tree. That bird just eased around and started back up the rise, so when his buddy cleared the tree he was by I gave him a dose of TSS and he looked like a sledge hammer hit him.

It was exciting and fun to shoot one, but I never even took a call out of my vest. I told myself going in I was gonna just sit where I thought they'd go and it worked out. It was over by 630. Some days I'd rather be lucky than good.

Mossberg 12 gauge. I just got exposed to the Tss bug. I'm gonna have to pick up a 20 gauge or maybe a 410 before next season. That's some bad stuff!

42 yards & it was like he got hit by a 9 iron!

Congrats guys. Glad you are on the board TreeHanger.

I have no idea what is going on down at my place. Less gobbling, less tracks, and less sightings than I can ever remember. I went Saturday and Sunday and Did not hear a gobble or see a turkey. Normally it's the kind of place where you can get on a bird early and if It doesn't pan out you can go find another one no problem. Depressing right now.

Nothing but skeeters this morning. About carried me off. Got a little intel about some afternoon field birds I'm going to give a whirl shortly. If nothing else, maybe I can roost one for tomorrow.

Update: I missed again this afternoon. I suck

Well boys I finally closed the deal on a bird we named Clovis because his gobble was like a log truck's jake brake. grin

He was right where I left him last Saturday, which was a mistake on his part. He did the exact same thing and I let him go off the back of the ridge and called to him 1 time as I ran to close the gap. He turned around, came back, and started spinning like a top on the ridge and gobbling. I had already planned to use a dirt mound to slip up the back side and it worked out perfect. Every time he'd gobble I would crawl a little. I got to the dirt mound and could hear him on the other side. I couldn't decide if i wanted to cluck at him or not because our birds have been running from any kind of calling all year. Finally, I decided I would just ease back and sit down because my arms and legs were jelly.

When I eased back I snapped a twig, and that was all it took for him to walk over and take a peek. The TSS done its thang! grin

Wasn't turkey hunting today, but daughter and I did hear a bird gobble 2 seperate times around 10:00am this morning.

Went fishing with Faith this morning. She's become quite a fisherman. I don't even have to bait her hook or release her fish, unless they are too big for her hand to go around. There were a few of them I had to take off.

I couldn't decide if i wanted to cluck at him or not because our birds have been running from any kind of calling all year. Finally, I decided I would just ease back and sit down because my arms and legs were jelly.

When I eased back I snapped a twig, and that was all it took for him to walk over and take a peek. The TSS done its thang! grin

18lb 6oz.

Awesome!

How close was he when you shot?

God Bless,
David B.

He was actually farther than I thought. Probably 30 yards.

Congrats Tree Hanger. That's a stud!

And congrats to you too Mr David. That looks like a good time and definitely some good sized bream.

I'm planning on giving the turkeys one last go this week or this weekend. I've only sat down on one bird in 7 hunts since I killed that one about a month ago. Our turkeys have disappeared. We have only killed 3 this year and normally kill about twice that many and still have birds gobbling! It has made me decide to go play golf and fish some weekends instead of chasing birds that won't gobble.

I hate that. I thought I'd have you a place to hunt down there but my buddy said they haven't done anything all year.

It's all good. That's the way it goes. I never would have thought I'd want a different place to go hunt haha. I Just don't understand what happened this year. Our habitat hasn't changed a bit since last year and this place has produced 5+ birds a year every year since before I was born

Enjoyed it gentleman. Sorry I missed #2 and #3. No more opportunities after that 2nd miss. Never sat down on a gobbling bird this year. Very depressing.

Yes Sir!

Glad to be on the team. Definitively a difficult year, and I believe the turkeys are able to add a point in the score cards for 2017 season.

God Bless,
David B.
