I've shot a compound bow my whole life!, but more and more lately I've been debating a crossbow, my current bow is a no cam htx, but considering a real nice Barnett, can someone convince me to keep my compound, or is having a crossbow just much more worth having

Are you selling the compound to get the crossbow? Or are you considering buying the Barnett and having both.

They both kill deer. Both are fun to shoot.

The crossbow is easier to shoot, yes, as everyone who hates them likes to yell about. Cock it and then aim and pull the trigger. But it still requires practice, getting comfortable with it, finding the best arrows-heads, and determining your ethical range. You're not going to be shooting stuff at 80 yards just because it has a stock and trigger.

Within 40 yards they kill the chit out of deer when you do your part. It's like hitting them with a 4x4.

If you can shoot one for a while before buying, I'd recommend that.

If you really like shooting a compound, Even if you do go with the crossbow, don't get rid of the compound. I shot a right hand compound for over 25 years, my shoulder finally went, I bought a barnett crossbow and shot a deer with it this season. It's not the same. 2 weeks after I shot the deer with the crossbow I bought a left handed bow because I missed shooting the bow.

I would keep the compound no matter what. They are fun to shoot and if you have kids then they will love the crossbow. Win Win either way. That is what i did. Just my 2 cents.

When they became legal in Indiana several years ago I swore I would never have one. Then last year I wanted one to use in shooting house when it was raining. I found a great deal on a WR. I decided to get it. After shooting it I never picked up my compound this year. It was good from 10 to 60 yds. I stayed away from Barnett after reading all the reviews. Plus after reading all the great reviews on 10pt and the service dept. I went with them.

BTW, TenPoint also owns Horton and Wicked Ridge crossbows. All three are really good. The Wicked Ridge is their more affordable line but is very good and more than enough to kill deer.

I shoot a Barnett and haven't had any problems with mine but I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a TP, WR or Horton bow.

Had to start using a crossbow several years ago and have gotten used to it...I have killed a few deer with it but I do miss the compound bow.
I would say they both have their good/bad points but whatever type you want to shoot is fine with me

I've been reduced to the crossbow due to multiple shoulder surgeries and arthritis. But I much prefer a compound bow. Smaller, lighter, less bulky, more powerful and no issues with "decocking".

My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

Troy I was right in the middle if that war. I was one of the most outspoken against the crossbow and I still believe they should be limited to the disabled only. But we were beaten from the start and just didn't know it. We could not compete against the money that was spent to buy the support for the new regs.

I know right where you were. A lot of us were neck deep in it, but the money won out. I lost any respect I ever had for those supporting xbows in bow season.

It never was about getting more hunters in the woods. It was corporate greed and wanting to sell xguns.

perzactly Perch.

What pissed me off was the folks that said Alabama hunters by the hundreds wanted crossbows in bow season, making up outlandish numbers to support the lie. And it was a straight out lie.

shot bows for years. I have for the last 10 years shot compounds and put a lot of cash into them. Bought a Barnett crossbow about 3 years ago and love it. Compound bow in a case and have not used it in 3 years.

As much as compound bow shooters piss and moan about the necessity of practice, you'd think they'd realize 99% of bow shooters don't practice much, and that makes shooting one less ethical. Crossbow takes some of that away.

....I shoot a compound for the record.

I don't have a problem with y'all crossbow shooters assuming you are elderly or handicap.

Just kidding. What ever floats your boat.

X bows sure are hard to move around with in the woods though. If there is an easy way to do it I wish some one would tell me.

If you like to shoot a xbow it's fine with me. I shot one a few years back.

Put it down though when my taint started cramping and my boobs swelled up.

Only reason whatsoever I want/need an xbow is because my dumb butt lifted weights super heavy, pretty much ruining my shoulders, and just can't pull back a compound enough to practice with one, and I'm not one to just go wound an animal if it can't be helped, just trying to keep it as humane as possible

No. Shaw isn't my last name, just a nickname.

Correct , as awkward as a bow is to tote, a Xbow is worse. And you don't have that quick second shot when a doe train comes down the tracks.

Back in the 80's, I hunted exclusively with a bow. I hunted deer. It did not matter what came by, they went down whether buck or doe. I killed around 90 deer with the bow and wound up hurting my back at work. Struggled with the bow aggravating my back injury each time I practiced. I also missed two deer with my bow during this time, which I had never done before. I had a clean run of no misses for about 10 years with the bow. I still managed to kill several deer each year with my bow during this time with the hurting back.

I bought a Parker crossbow a few years later to make the back issues easy to deal with and after about 50 shots, no more practice was needed. If you could judge your distance well, there was no need to practice. First year hunting with the crossbow, I let every deer I saw walk. Never shot a single deer with it. To me, it just seemed like it was to easy. The next year I let a nice 8 walk at 15 yards with the crossbow. Just couldn't shoot him with it. I promised my self that day the next buck I saw I would shoot. About two weeks later, I killed a big wide 6 that was at least 5 years old. Felt bad about it for years and didn't bowhunt any for several years after that..

My son at the time was able to start hunting with me and he wanted to bowhunt. I fixed him up with a PSE and he practiced all the time. That year he killed his first does with the bow and he was hooked. I would go hunting all the time with him because he was too young to drive and I carried the crossbow each time with me. I was letting a lot of nice deer walk hoping to put him on them the next hunt. Once gun season opened, I still carried the crossbow. I killed one last doe with the crossbow that blew at us back around 2005 and have not picked it up since. I just quit hunting during bow season all together, picked up my rifle that had been in the safe for years, and killed three bucks each year since.

I now bypass bow season even after shooting my Mathews Switchback XT a few times each fall. Back usually starts to bother me when it has had enough of the drawing back and I put the bow up again for another year. I only killed two deer with the crossbow and killed over a hundred with an Oneida Eagle bow. I haven't killed a deer with either bow in at least 10 years. To each their own, but the crossbow just wasn't for me. My son still bow hunts each year and hunts a lot with the bow during gun season. He has killed some super nice deer with his bow as well as some "book bucks" with his rifle.

I can't stand a thief.

For 15 years I only bowhunted and was fortunate enough to kill some pretty nice bucks. Then came back troubles that prevented me from bow hunting. I went for about 8 years just gun hunting enough to get some meat. I really missed being in the woods in bow season so last year I bought a Ten Point Turbo GT. It is fun to shoot and I killed the only deer I shot at. Most of all it got me back into the woods in early fall which I had missed so much. I too was one of the most out spoken critics of the x bow. If I was still able physically to shoot a compound I would but it just ain't possible. I do still stand up to pee though.
