Want to build some catfish traps. Anybody have a favorite design? What is the easiest way to make the throat (cone)

Two roads diverged in the woods and I took the one with deep ruts, hills and mud.It may be bumpy but WHAT A RIDE!

Never really had a need for a trap for catfish always caught them with hook and line or jugging. Are you trying to commercially sell them or something?

Not selling just to eat and freeze a few

We used 1/4" concrete rod for the frame. Made 3 circles about 2' in diameter with 6 runners about 5' long. Weld at all together and cover in chicken wire. Make a cone out of chicken wire for the back and another cone to create a second compartment where we would put cottonseed meal cakes for the bait. Of course, anchor it so that bait compartment is upriver and the fish will enter the first cone on the downriver side, and most of them would go through the second cone too.

We would anchor them with a concrete block and a length of wire about 10' long. We carried a long piece of concrete rod with a hook in it to catch the wire and pull up the basket to check it. There was no need to mark it and nobody else would ever know it was there. A big flood could sand them in or wash them away, but it was a great system for catching a whole bunch of catfish.

PCP where did (do) you get the cotton seed meal cake?

Sweetwater Hardware in Sweetwater AL used to sell them. They got the seed from the Gin they owned next door, but I don't think they sell it any more.

We bought it from a store in Marion, but I can't remember which one. It was only about 50 years ago; I'm sure they still sell it. smile

This looks interesting there was another thread about a wire trap and this one came up with it.

When I was a kid I Made a fish trap using bicycle rims, tomato cages woven wire and chicken wire. Basically a giant minnow trap. Worked well in our lake at the house
