One of my tanks that I use on my grill isn't getting a great seal and the problems looks to be on the threads where it leaves the tank and into the regulator. Obviously I don't want to use it this way and I want to use the tank that I just filled up. The question is, can I wrap the threads well with Teflon tape and be alright until I use this tank up? Basically, will the propane cause damage to the tape that will cause it to leak again soon?

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Get the yellow teflon tape and you should be good until tank empties

You gonna risk a potential fiery death on the advice of these morons?

For $20 just swap it out and get another tank, a co-worker used to pump propane he has always told us a bbq size tank is equal to 57 sticks of dynamite.

Or get the regulator line on your fish cooker and swap it out, I believe I misread your post, not a tank problem a hose issue

So it's the stem that's the problem? Not the regulator, correct? Being as safety is my job, you know my answer lol. I would swap it out. You'll PROBABLY be ok wrapping it in tape, but why risk it when you can swap it out for a few bucks?

Swap that tank out.Propane is really easy to ignite and i'd rather not read your obituary.

Yeah you can "probably" stop the leak with the teflon tape and no propane will not degrade the tape.

Here is the problem:
If the leak isn't stopped 100%, there are 3 really bad potentials for danger:

1) continue to leak until the concentration in the air gets to the point where it explodes

2) You have a small unnoticeable leak, and it catches fire. The fire won't be noticeable, but it will get hot enough to melt the connecting hose. Once it melts the hose, a jet of fire will be shooting out of the remaining nozzle. I can't find pictures, but I would expect this jet to be ~6-8 ft long.

3) Someone passing our from the fumes

Swap it out, but be sure to inform someone of the tanks problems.
If you swapped to get this tank, they may give you a different full one for free.

Y'all really need to brush up on your reading comprehension. He said its NOT a tank problem. Its a hose / connector problem. Still, I recommend buying a new hose, or even new grill. I wouldn't take a chance on the tape.

Go to lowes and buy a new regulator with hose for about $15.

I run into this several times a year. Most likely it's not the hose nor the threads on the bottle. It's the rubber o-ring inside the the tank that creates the seal, it's got a hairline crack. Take the tank back to where you got it and explain the seal is bad and they will swap it out.

The threading on the tank is where the problems seems to be. I figured this out from the gas rushing out when I turned it on. A new hose and regulator did not help, so the problem is that for some reason on that one particular tank, the threads don't seal good. It is my spare tank, so no big deal other than it is about half full and I'm a cheap ass.

I stand corrected. Seems its MY reading skill that needs help.
But really? You'd risk your life for a $17 gas bottle?
Really?

Jawbone, from one AU fan to another, don't risk it. Honestly, there aren't enough Aubies on this site, we can't afford to lose one!

Just swap out your good bottle when empty then the next day take the one with the bad seal back and explain its bad, the gas leaked out overnight and they will swap it. I always put some wide tape on the bottle and write "bad oring" so the propane supplier will see it and get it out of rotation.

There is no way in Hades that one 25 lb grill bottle would produce an explosion anywhere comparable with 57 sticks of dynamite.

I won't risk it. That is why I asked. I just didn't know if there was an easy, safe fix before I junked the tank.

Now, should I take it to the country and set it up at about our 400 yrd mark and have target practice? How high will it go at about half full?

Yes, but you've got to have an ignition source. A bullet won't ignite it, unless you've got a tracer round. We need videos of this.
