I am considering getting tested for allergies. Over the past 6-7 years and usually only later at night, my hands have started itching. When I say itch, I mean a burning itch. It’s bad enough that it will wake me up and nothing except that Eucerin skin calming junk will help it. That’s when I’m lucky. Sometimes the Eucerin won’t even help. I’ve tried Benadryl and cortisone cream and it won’t touch it. Before I spend a small fortune to possibly find out it isn’t an allergy, I wanted to see if any of you have had this problem and did find out it was an allergy. This isn’t an every night thing, but it’s gotten to the point of being common enough now that I’ve had about all I can take.

shingles? Something in your bed?

Nah. Nothing like the shingles and the problem started with my old bed. I don't have any signs of reaction either. No rash, nothing.

Is there hair trying to grow? Sorry I couldn't resist. When I was in teens and early 20's my hands would do that for a couple of weeks and then peal. They just stopped on their on, and to this day I still don't know what caused them to do that.

Do you have problems with dry hands? Is it during the summer too, or just in the winter time?

Occasionally, I'll have problems with my hands being itchy, and it's only during the winter. I've figured out with the dry winter air, I have to use hand lotion as part of a daily regimen. Never a problem in the summertime.

Anything is possible, but I doubt it's an allergy.

Have you tried Google?

It's year around. It may not be allergies, but I'm on a mission to figure it out now. Like I said, it's the worst itch you could imagine.

Try Sarna lotion. It's available from Walmart. I just had knee surgery and the percocet they gave me made me itch pretty bad. I didn't want to change pain killers because it did keep my knee feeling pretty good, but the itching was rough. My mom suggested the Sarna and it really did work to keep the itching under control.

More than likely its a nerve problem, try going to a neurologist. Sleeping with your arms up under your pillow can damage nerves over a period of time. Kinda like "carpel tunnel syndrome".

I'll give it a shot. Thanks

I've actually heard that and used to sleep with my arms under my pillow. I don't know it could be. I asked the future wife and she doesn't seem to think it's a nerve problem simply because the Eucerin cream does help most of the time. She said it wouldn't be helped by anti-itch cream like that if it were a nerve problem.

Put on a thick, oily ointment, Eucerin or other. Then put socks or thin cotton gloves on.

If this doesn't assist, go see a dermatologist. Hand dermatitis is tough to treat and pinpoint the problem. They will have higher strength steroid ointments to assist.

Look up the side effects on Fexofenadine. Itching or hives is listed under the "consult your physician is these symptoms occur" section.

Does this itching you have seem like it's not just on the surface of the skin? Do you sometimes rub your hands across the corners of furniture or door facings very briskly trying to get even a minute bit of relief to no avail? Does it feel like the very marrow in the bones of your hands are infested with chiggers and poison ivy?

If so, I feel your pain. The very same pain or itch that is. I have never been to the Dr. about it, but have threatened to do so many times. Cortisone, Benadryl, nor anything else will begin to touch it. It doesn't seem to matter if it's day or night for me, only that once it sets in, it will drive me crazy for hours.

With me, I really think it is brought on by stress, but I'm not even sure that is the cause, but I do seem to have the incessant itching during stressful times. If yours sounds like what I described, and you discover what is causing it, I would be very interested in knowing also.

It's it isolated to your hands only? Do you work with insulation or concrete every day?

Basically yes. You have to scratch, but the more you scratch the worse it itches. Kept me up until 1 am this morning. I have thought about the stress factor, but I don't know that I'm any more stressed than normal. What I mean is, I'm not under any extra stress that would cause it to flare up. It started when I was in investment banking working 75+ hours a week and doing grad school, so stress would definitely explain it then...but not now. Then again, it might not take much.

The only thing I have found that will help is a few coats of Eucerin skin calming cream. I am going to go to the Dr at some point. My fiancé does seem to think it's an allergy of some kind due to the fact that Eucerin does help. But, she did say if it's a nervous system issue it could be a placebo effect.

I'm adopted so I started getting all that tested at age 30. I have always been healthy. The first and only surgery I ever had was at 31 and it was gallbladder. But, the fiancé had done a cardiology rotation and saw some guys in their 30s die from hereditary heart problems they weren't aware they had. She even saw a few strokes. I don't know my family history so it scared me into getting blood work done twice a year. Nothing has shown up.

I suggest you stop reading nonsense articles.
