My old bluebird house in the front yard had 6 hatchings in it last year, but after about 10 years it was falling apart. I have some cedar I had cut 5/8ths inch thick and a slab of good cypress so I built a couple of new houses yesterday. I think I'll build a few more to give away.

Built two and put them up yesterday. Need about 6. Or 8 more. When reading about them it says not to put them to close. We have tons of blue birds and dont think it would matter. Would love to have more in sight of the house. Anyone see an issue with to close. On a side note when they are nesting, we will buy crickets and toss them in the yard and watch them fly down and get em. How they see crickets from that far away I have no idea.

Too close is an issue. They are very territorial and anything under 100 yards apart is not recommended. I have some closer, maybe 75 yards in direct line of sight with each other and they use them at the same time. You can also get by with having them closer if your house or a building is between the BB houses. I have one in my front yard and one in the back yard and they're always nested in at the same time.

I've tried putting them within sight and they just won't use them. Like you said one in the front of a house, one in the back and maybe one behind the barn. My best old house was in the front yard on a power pole with a line over the top of it.

i figured it would be good but they are only 75 to 100 yards apart. id like to have on on every power pole on my street and scattered through our pasture.. i think i have plenty of blue bird pairs... i really enjoyh listening to the blue birds.. the best house we got is at my parents house.. its literally 20 steps by a window... watch em all day there..

Do you guys use a snake or other vermin deterrent on your posts? I have 3 or 4 to put up, but am leery of just making a death trap for the birds.

You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?

Be kind to one another and tell the ones you love that you love them often. We never know what tomorrow will bring.

I have zero up, but every time I walk out into the yard, there're bluebirds in every direction you look! Drives my Mom crazy, because she does have a couple houses up, and just a couple bluebirds around to show for it!

I put up bat houses, mason bee nests, and I have a hawk living out back that wants to be a pet so bad he can't stand it, but he just can't quite bring himself to commit! *L* I was on the tractor Tuesday evening, and he tried twice to land on my ROPS bar, but chickened out at the last minute and landed on a limb about 20' away. The tractor doesn't bother him any, but if I'm doing something else loud, chainsaw, or skilsaw, for instance, he moves off about 100 yds or so screams until I stop, then comes closer. I dunno why...he only does it to me or BamBam. If Melinda or anyone else goes outside, they only see him at a distance, if at all, but he's usually within 20-50 feet of me or BamBam, and has ventured as close as 1-10 feet.

The vast majority of mine are put up on a fence with an eletric fence wire on them.

Do a Google search for using bird netting for a snake trap. That will protect them.
