Geezer, it's the summer depredation permit to use firearms at night with bait for shooting hogs between May 1 and August 31. Instead of being able to hunt and kill hogs at night with bait and guns on your own property or elsewhere you now have to get permission from the DCNR biologist and not the game wardens. Was told yesterday that the game wardens are no longer allowed to issue. Has to be done by the biologist now.
True. This was discussed during the CAB meeting and the director said the permits now are to come from biologists and not game wardens for the May 1 to August 31 "season." What a load of BS. A man can't go out on his own land or go out with someone else on their land and shoot a destructive feral hog without a permit.

Serious question: it's obviously ridiculous that one needs some special paperwork to hunt hogs for any reason whatsoever. There is literally no reason why they should not incentivize killing them any which way you want. If someone wants to illegally kill deer at night, or desires to be the most ethical person on planet earth, paperwork isn't going to factor in.
So, that being said, it seems that most people with a hog problem would just ignore this requirement, and just go kill them over bait at night, and be done with it. Is this not a widespread practice? I guess I'm just surprised many people would even fool with getting a ridiculous permit when the chances of getting caught are minimal.
Rant off

Take it how you want, but I have heard that shooting pigs at night is very low on the list of things to issue a citation for in places that truly have a hog problem. At least for wardens who are reasonable people. I would call the local warden and tell him what you were doing and that the permit wasn't issued yet to give him a heads up in case he gets complaints about shooting at night. You might be surprised at what he says. Serious question: it's obviously ridiculous that one needs some special paperwork to hunt hogs for any reason whatsoever. The powers that be in the state of Alabama really don't want the hogs to be killed by hunters. Let's just say there is money to be made on them down the road. Down the road...back up the road a ways...even now!

But I know a lot of people don't have a ton of respect for 'rules' that they don't agree with. I was just wondering if this was a commonly violated hunting regulation. Sounds like no

Alabama follows some states on lots of new regs. On the hog issue they should follow what Louisiana is doing. Once the deer seasons are out in the certain zone you hunt, you can't start hunting hogs at night anyway you want. All you have to do is make one phone call to the local sheriff and let them know where you are hunting and when. That way if some concerned citizen call in gunshots heard they know it's only you. Really a simple thing.
It's hard to kiss the lips at night that chews your a$$ all day long.
