I am picking up a 280 Remington this afternoon.

Does anyone know if a 120gr TTSX can be loaded in a 280Rem?

Seems like that would be a super flat and light recoiling absolutely awesome deer load.

I am sure it can but think of it like this....

Ballistic coefficient is horrible. Down range energy is going to suffer. If you are just making it go faster inside a cartridge's max point blank range what did you achieve.... Nothing.

You can get good killing power out over 400 yards on a Whitetail with a 140 gr. at around 3000 fps with a point blank range of 300 yards with minimal recoil. To me that is a sweet spot for the .280 as a deer cartridge.

If the 140s don't work try the 150s.Why? Every .280 i've seen favors heavy bullets.

BC is .350 on the little 120 Barnes bullets which isn't bad at all. Start em at 3200 fps with a 200 yard zero and at 500 yards they're only 7 minutes low and still have over 1000 fbs of energy. I shoot em in my 280 Ackley. I'd pick something different for an elk hunt but the 120's are bad news on a whitetail.
A 140 started at 2950 or so would have just a touch more energy at 500 but it would also be just a little over a minute lower.
Couldn't go wrong with either it would just be a matter of which one your rifle liked best.

Still don't see the advantage.

So if you are comparing a 500 yard performance as part of your argument then I would say there is no comparison to be made. I would rather have something OVER 140 grain with a higher BC. Shots are not made in a vacuum chamber or by reading the trajectory off a ballistic table. .350 ain't good when better is readily available in the same caliber. That is about as bad as 7mm gets... I mean call it "good" as compared to what? .22 cal?

So to just peel away the onion further... If you're goal is to shoot a 120 over 3000 why are you shooting a .280 in the first place? Who would walk into a gun store and say... "I want to shoot a 120gr bullet over 3000, so please give me a .280". The answer to that is the reason you don't see factory loads with these little bullets in calibers across the board. It is also the reason there are so many calibers to pick from in the first place. It doesn't make sense. There is something better and readily available. In this case and equal comparison would be something like .25-06 with a 120 at 3200 BUT with a higher about a .390-4 BC.

See how that works. A lot better, no, but better. If this were that easy we'd all shoot 110 grainers from a 30-06.

And don't say well you can't shoot heavier bullets with the .25-06 like you can with .280 because that is my point. .280 is meant for heavier bullets.

All that being said go ahead and shoot 120's if that floats your boat just understand why some of us would recommend a heavier bullet. I ain't mad at you.

Completely agree here. Just get you some 160-170gr bullets and don't worry about the speed. Id prefer the 168gr berger with the BC at .56 but that's just me. If I ever get the itch to shoot my 7mm again that what ill be using

Only accurate rifles are interesting.

Thank you. I saw it pop up for sale and had to snag it.
In a lot of ways it overlaps in its capabilities of my 7MM08 but in other ways it is more capable.

This is my first Steyr, it seems like a nice rifle but just sorta odd.

The reason the 120gr's popped into my head was because I wasn't sure if 280 was a caliber that benefitted from the equation, the more speed the better.

If you already have a 7-08, I would run 160 grainers in that Express.

Don't be calling it the 7mm Remington Express(which is what Big Green did in 1979)

What would be involved with doing the conversion/modification?
How much would it run?

If you want faster 7mil buy weatherby or ultra mag. P.O.(Parker) Ackley was super smart with his Improved cartridges.

We've gotten off topic a little. The OP's question was whether or not the 120 TTSX is a good whitetail bullet out of a .280. The answer is it's an excellent bullet for whitetails.
When I got a .280AI I tried Barnes 120's 140's and 145's. My rifle likes the 120's better than anything and they will kill the living hell out of a deer.
If I was shooting past 400 yards or shooting at an elk I'd do something different but I'm not and I doubt that AUM is either.
Goatkiller I don't ever hunt with a 30-06 but I do shoot 110's out of my .308 most of the time. Sometimes I do go all the way up to 130's though. wink

I agree with Joshm28 too..... if I knew a gunsmith that wouldn't charge me an arm and a leg I'd ream that chamber out to 280 Ackley. That will give you a big jump up from a 7-08 if you ever start shooting big critters way off and you actually need heavy bullets.

Just have the chamber reamed to 280 AI. After that, shoot your current 280s in it to blow out the shoulders. Buy 280 AI dies and enjoy.

More than it's worth on a factory gun.
