There will always be deer in the mid and western black belt strip but i think the new hotspot for deer is moving east. Russell, Lee, Chambers counties will be the dallas, marengo, and lowndes of the future. Purely gut feeling on this.

Black belt living on its 80's and early 90's reputation. Still pocket's of very good hunting. ASSUMING GC is accurate and every county had 100% reporting (it isn't close) look at the Black Belt numbers. Only Dallas is living up to its reputation. ...But gamecheck only counts dead deer, not live ones, and you're assuming the same number of folks hunting in those counties vs, say, Walker county. I bet there's twice as many people chasing 1/3 the deer in Walker county. So, not sure how not as many dead deer means anything. I probably means there are less people hunting them. So, you're saying GC is useless?  You do have a valid point. But the Black Belt is way overrated today with the exception of spotty areas. Still fetching premium prices all over though. Perception = $$$

4,500 acres in Marengo Co on the river what most people would consider one of the top places in the state and not enough deer for you to keep the lease. WOW.
Parts of south Marengo, south of Linden, deer populations are declining big time. I wish I knew the exact answer, but I believe it's simply a combination of hunting pressure (due to the area being a traditional hotspot), those hunters accustomed to shooting does and can't stop, and coyotes with hardly any substantial trapping in the area. If you guys hunted where I do, you would swear deer needed to be added to the endangered species list. It's been a rapid decline in the past 10 years - very alarming. I feel like the sawyerville area is the same way. Havent even seen a deer crossing the road in so long i cant remember it must be my fault because I hunted 4 miles south of Linden in High School and on the BW river near Sawyerville in college. This was over 25 years ago but I do have a habit of scaring deer away.

If it's the place I'm thinking about Shady Grove? that place was hunted out years ago it used to be prime time hunting back in the day. It's funny you can go across the blacktop road and be titty deep in deer and some monster bucks

It must be my fault because I hunted 4 miles south of Linden in High School and on the BW river near Sawyerville in college. This was over 25 years ago but I do have a habit of scaring deer away. I grew up south of Linden back in the 80's and even then, the deer population in our area wasn't as high as in other parts of the county. We hunted in the early 90's some property belonging to Miller Lumber Company that joined Shady Grove HC and would always see a LOT of deer. I saw 75 opening day of gun season one year... and when Shady Grove would put on their annual dog drive it wasn't uncommon to see 150+ deer.
