I'm wanting to get a young dog to start on blood trailing. I coon hunted for about 10 years up until 3 years ago so I'm not concerned about my ability to train a dog.
I'm looking hard at getting a bloodhound, are there any downsides to this paticular breed?
Do yalls treat yalls dogs like pets, or just work dogs?
What do yall do to keep them in shape during the offseason? This part was easy with coon dogs, just hunt them year round. But you obviously there aren't any blood trails after deer season. And just running them I would be worried about them to start running un shot deer.

I know the time, effort, and money it takes to make a good. Not worried about that,I just have a constant desire to watch dogs work.

With a bloodhound it's a 50/50 shot at what you will get. YOu will either get a jam up dog with some drive or you will get one that doesn't want to leave the front porch.

Well that's out the window then. Any suggestions as to what kind of dog then?

We're having another tracking convention this Spring just outside of Demopolis. They're supposed to have the date set by this weekend and I'll post it up. I think they we're just waiting to hear from some of the judges to make sure they could be there. What I would suggest if you can come is to attend one of these events and check out all the dogs that will be there. There will likely be at least one dog from all the main tracking breeds and even a few not so common ones. Once you see all of them in person then you'll have a better idea of which one you think might fit you the best. Some of the more common breeds used are.....

Labs
Wirehaired daschund
Texas Blue Lacy
Slovensky Kopov
Cur breeds such as mountain cur
Catahoulas
Blood Hounds
Drathaar (sp?)

I like the mountain curs for anything requiring a nose. There really is no comparison.

They can figure out which way a squirrel was going in less than thirty seconds.

Any old dog will do though. A mutt is as good as any other breed in the vast majority of cases.

I've had about every kind of dog there is I guess and they all have strong points and weak points. I have a 100 lb rescue weimi right now and he's fun to watch - kind of like a really big silver colored lab on speed. Too bad he's scared of pigs lol

Ladner Black Mouth Curs will make a good tracking dog, and could possibly be used for other jobs as well. Very solid line of curs !

A smaller cur breed dog has it all.
