One of my favorite places is where four draws tie into one creek bottom that is only about 60yds wide and goes into some of the nastiest cover on our property. I have killed four bucks out of there in the past 4 yrs and hoping to add another this week. Seems like my best rut hunting has always been associated with a creek or draw of some sort. How many of yall have had luck hunting creeks and draws during the rut?

Our club has a place where 3 steep draws converge into a single creek bed. At the bottom where the creek forms is surrounded by fairly open hardwoods (i.e. no thick stuff around). So, basically the same type of terrain less the nasty cover. I've scouted it twice, one time a few weeks back. Not a danged sign of deer anywhere.

Don't have any draws but love creek beds especially where they run through a 2-3 year old clear cut. Weather looks good this weekend boys! Finally!

I have a little. Problem is that I have to get in real tight and the shots are usually 30 yards or less. That close in and they can bust your scent real easily.

I like to hunt the top of several draws coming together myself.

Place I hunted many years ago had a similar setup: three draws leading to a creek that flowed out of one of them, with nastythickchit on one side and open on the other. Saw some nice bucks there. Learned a lot. Wish I'd known more then and hunted it differently, because I think I could have killed a whopper or two in there.

Now it's all privately owned and I think the owners don't hunt it. frown

Sounds like a place I used to hunt. We called it "buck hollow".

just be careful of swirling winds in creek bottoms.

No chit. I've learned more about that this season via trial and error than in years past, some good and some WTH moments. All learning experiences.

Stupid wind and hills and such.

Thats the reason I rarely hunt creek bottoms, it is almost impossible to find a stand that won't let swirling winds spook the hell out of everything in the bottom. I will put a stand high enough up a ridge to catch the prevailing wind and still see the bottom.

I don't hunt "in" the bottom but a top ridges looking down in them. I can't deal with the swirling winds either.

^This. I've killed my two this year cruising the top of ridges.

I've figured out in these rolling hills we have down here, if you hunt a south facing slope on a north wind, your scent will end up blowing north at some point. One of my favorite places to hunt on the national Forest is in a creek bottom

Ive got a place a lot like this, and no sign what so ever. Don't let that fool you tho, them bucks funnel through there when the time is right. Don't just not hunt it because of lack of sign. The spot I have, the bucks just come through every which way, they don't make trails in there.

Hunt the bottoms in the mornings if you can. When the air temp increases your scent will rise. Climb as high as you can. SMZ's in clearcuts are as good as it gets. Figure out how to beat the wind and you will consistently kill mature bucks in these areas.
