I have a dark suspicion there won't BE any paper mills in the USA in 20 years. Like the roads and bridges system, too little maintenance too late. I fear the big mill owning companies will build them in Brazil, Russia, etc.

No IRS, OSHA, EPA, EEOC, etc, etc, etc. hope like hell in wrong. Buying 70 acres this month I hope to cut timber off in 20 years.

Email, online books/magazines, and digital storage etc are probably doing more to kill the paper industry than any of the organizations you listed.

True for copy paper but not linerboard. IP supplies a lot of boxes for food items like chicken and fruit. Produce companies will always need boxes.

There may not be paper mills but there will be cellulose mills.

The Panama City, Florida paper mill is 82 years old, first built by IP.
I called the mill incident information number and ask if they had an estimate on the time to repair the mill and they did not know at this time.

GP (Koch Brothers) has been trying to buy all the paper mills in the area. Who knows, IP may decide to sell now.

Copy paper you're absolutely right. On my machine we make color paper, such as the paper for 3m sticky notes and we are going to start liner board in late February. 6 weeks of color ,shut down, 6 weeks liner board. That being said internet shopping will only get bigger and more popular and they all need boxes, also I guarantee you can't wipe your ass with the internet. Paper mills are here to stay just maybe not simple white copy paper like you're thinking.

At least now when the people at IP start the paperwork to rebuild the mill they won't have their balls in a vice with the EPA over the environmental crap. I would think one phone call to Trump from he CEO would expedite the paperwork.

Man I really wonder if that's a scare tactic sometimes. We got bought out by Packaging Corporation of America and their attitude and the new mindset being sent out is we will put money in and we are making money so it's going to run. It if you ain't here to help us make money and run well.... we just shut you down personally. I like it myself and it keeps the degenerates on edge.

Just heard from an IP big dog that it will take a miracle to reopen the mill . Boiler work alone will be 120 million plus.

Paper mills have been making a killing the past few years, I would be surprised if they don't fix it, but who knows. The friend of mine that uses the IP mill as his bread and butter is thinking it will be 9 or more months to repair it. I hope they get it going. I've seen IP at Mobile closed, Scot at Mobile closed, St Joe closed and now this. That is a lot of fiber that is gone from having a paper mill to haul to. That is in addition to all the saw mills that are closed.

Won't fewer mills result in lower prices for fiber?

It's all about the overall market share world wide whether they will rebuild or not. All I can speak for is the white paper market and it has been in steady decline (3%) per year so the major player want tons out of the market. Liner/Containerboard market been strong from my understanding, but you never know. Less tons equate to more dollars per ton.

I'm sure they have a team of engineers/accountants working on the fix it or close decision now. Sounds like massive damage and a huge impact on the regional economy.

They were one of the few paper mills other than GP, owned by the Koch brothers. They are basically a monopoly in this area now owning the Brewton, Monroeville and Cedar Springs, Ga mills. I think IP is like most any other company, if somebody offered enough money they would sell a mill. They sold the Panama City mill in 1979 to Southwest Forest Industries.
Not only does it cease usage of round wood purchased, but there is a glut of chips, sawdust and bark from the sawmills that has to go somewhere. The explosion at IP was about the last thing the local timber market needed in this area, stumpage prices will fall like a rock and they will be felt for a long distance up into Alabama.
