Last new mill built in this country was (I'm told) ARP between Monroeville and Grove Hill. It was built in early 70's, so almost 50 years old now, and that's the NEWEST?
I have a dark suspicion there won't BE any paper mills in the USA in 20 years. Like the roads and bridges system, too little maintenance too late. I fear the big mill owning companies will build them in Brazil, Russia, etc.
No IRS, OSHA, EPA, EEOC, etc, etc, etc. hope like hell in wrong. Buying 70 acres this month I hope to cut timber off in 20 years. Email, online books/magazines, and digital storage etc are probably doing more to kill the paper industry than any of the organizations you listed.

IP supplies a lot of boxes for food items like chicken and fruit. Produce companies will always need boxes.

There may not be paper mills but there will be cellulose mills. No IRS, OSHA, EPA, EEOC, etc, etc, etc. hope like hell in wrong. Buying 70 acres this month I hope to cut timber off in 20 years.

The McMillan Bloedel/Weyerhauser digester at Pine Hill/Camden blew up in the 80's and made a mess but I don't remember it damaging any other mill parts. That will not be a quick fix unfortunately...but the contractor that gets the job will walk away smelling like roses! And for my line of work it will be some good money

GP (Koch Brothers) has been trying to buy all the paper mills in the area. Who knows, IP may decide to sell now.

On my machine we make color paper, such as the paper for 3m sticky notes and we are going to start liner board in late February. 6 weeks of color ,shut down, 6 weeks liner board. That being said internet shopping will only get bigger and more popular and they all need boxes, also I guarantee you can't wipe your ass with the internet. Paper mills are here to stay just maybe not simple white copy paper like you're thinking.

I'm sure they have a team of engineers/accountants working on the fix it or close decision now. Sounds like massive damage and a huge impact on the regional economy.

They were one of the few paper mills other than GP, owned by the Koch brothers. They are basically a monopoly in this area now owning the Brewton, Monroeville and Cedar Springs, Ga mills. I think IP is like most any other company, if somebody offered enough money they would sell a mill. They sold the Panama City mill in 1979 to Southwest Forest Industries. Not only does it cease usage of round wood purchased, but there is a glut of chips, sawdust and bark from the sawmills that has to go somewhere. The explosion at IP was about the last thing the local timber market needed in this area, stumpage prices will fall like a rock and they will be felt for a long distance up into Alabama.
