My Dad has had both. Six of one and half a dozen of the other. Little to no difference between the two as far as value. It seems they both have a price increase about every 18 months.

Both are too expensive. Both require you to pick 300 channels you don't want, in order to get the 12 channels you do want.
Basically no difference.

The programming is comparable. The difference is in the remote controls, at least in my case.

I CURSE the change I made to DirecTV a year ago in March. The Genie remote works off an RF signal instead of IR, I believe. Yes, it's true I can now record 5 programs at once insted of 2, but the STOP, GO, SLOW-MO, and blowing through commercials and stopping the FAST-FORWARD just in time to resume watching your program is an exercise in futility. On DISH, you could get a feel for your remote layout, On DirecTV, the remote button positions look like they were randomly chosen by a 3 year old. You have to physically LOOK at the remote to choose instead of just operating by feel like you could on DISH. If you happen to brush against the wrong button, you can lose you program or change channels and lose what yo were watching. Also, the picture locks up all the time.

I HATE the SONOFABITCH! Screw DirecTV and their remotes.

I will be switching back to DISH and paying the penalty. I will pay more for DISH if I have to.

Call them and disconnect. Be without a tv for a day or so. They will call you back with pricing they didn't tell you before. In saying that I have a 60 mile antennae in my attic.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

My phone screen does not always work right, usually a lot of misspelled words....

The only reason we've been considering a switch is my wife is an AT&T retiree and she found out she could get a pretty good discount since AT&T bought out Direct.

+100
If you want you can call them up and tell them you are canceling and negotiate your $100 a month package to about $35 and keep the same channels.

Even then you are better off going to internet TV unless you are a sports fanatic.

You don't have to disconnect , just threaten to strongly . They'll connect you with a "customer retention specialist", they'll find some $ and quick.

I, too, retired several years ago from them and get that same discount, along with cell service. Even with that, I would pay more for DISH and just forget the hassle of DirecTV. They are moving, as a company, away from true craftsmen and innovation to low-paid workers with a high turnover.

I have direct tv and absolutely love it.

I am a lifelong fan of an NFL team and watch every game. Also a fan of a MLB team and try to watch as many games as I can, so the ability get sundayticket and MLB package to get every game is invaluable.

We have the wireless genie system, which is great. No wires to any tvs. Can move any tv anywhere you have power, I have the little satellite boxes 2 way taped to the back of each tv. Often move a tv outside to watch easily

I can record up to 4 things at one time. I can watch anything I have recorded in my house on my phone or my computer at work. I can control my recordings from my phone.

The only negative I have is the outdoor channels aren't HD yet

I will concede that being able to watch TV on my iPhone is a plus, but the Genie remote control issues just completely negate everything else and make me cuss like a sailor vs DISH.

Oh yeah, when it rains, or doesn't, you'll have signal loss. Sometimes for no apparent reason.

Well, that has been true of both providers in my case since they are small dishes that point through the atmosphere.

Hey, nice seeing you here, Outback! thumbup

As far as threatening to cancel to get the bill lower,I've heard that works with Direct, not so well with Dish.I don't want to make a threat if I'm not willing to actually pull the plug.
