I too like Woodhaven. Some brands are similar in size and shape while some tend to be a bit different. The last time I tried a Primos, it felt a good bit smaller to me, maybe it was just the tape. I don't know. Secondly, they each seem to use a variety of latex thicknesses. Thinner latex will run with less force but they wear out quicker. Some of the ones with thick latex have to be stretched a little before they run effortlessly. Try several brands when trying to find one you like.

I use YEKRUT calls but it's because I know the guy pretty well. They will work in a pinch.

As far as mouth calls go, there is a night and day difference in a good one and Walmart crap like primos and hs strut. Get some of yeks, some of lyles at houndstooth, hooks, or tom teasers. Houndstooth are my current favorite for about the last three years. Off the shelf, wood haven or zinc are your best bet. Wood haven has gone down hill in their quality control on mouth calls IMO, but they sound ok if you can find one stretched right. I've had good luck with zinc for consistentency and pretty good sounding, although haven't used them in a few years.

I use my cell phone. I've gotta app that plays all the sounds turkeys make. Works every time. Whild bill showed me the app I met a guy once hunting on a big lease in south Alabama that was a self proclaimed guide at a place in Alabama. Only call he had in his vest was an electronic call. Said that's all he had ever used. He was damn proud of it too. All I cold do is shake my head and walk the other direction in the dark.

If you can find some Yekrut calls you can't go wrong, if you know the right folks you can get them, other than those I would recommend Houndstooth calls out of Tuscaloosa Lyle makes great calls also..

Straight reeds are the easiest to run for those with less experience. If you are in the process of comparing calls to find a brand you like, buy similar calls from different manufacturers. Don't buy a straight reed call from one brand and a batwing cut from another brand. They will be totally different due to the cut.
My advice would be to buy some straight 2 or 3 reed calls from a few companies to see which you like the best. Once you pick a brand that you like, buy some of the different cuts they produce.

Buy some different cuts and try them. Different folks run different calls better or worse. I personally prefer a bat wing cut. Keep tryin till you find one that you are confident in. This, there are so many different cuts, thickness, and what ever else it is hard to say what will work for you, I like a 3 reed bat wing myself... Just go buy a few different cheap calls and try them out when you figure out which ones you like best then go buy some good ones of the same style... This is what I did when I started out...
