15-22 is where I'm comfortable.
I've killed several deer bow hunting out of 10 ft ladders. Cover and comfort are more important to me than height.
Ya'll are just overthinking it now

Many people really don't have a clue how high they are. I bet a lot that say they are 40' up probably are only 20'. Not that they are intentionally lying, they just aren't as high as they think.
If anyone doesn't know the difference in 20 feet and 40 feet being up in a tree then IMO they have some serious issues. That's a tremendous difference. Judging a buck's score or the weight of a bass is one thing. Not knowing that you're 20 feet higher in a tree is being stupid. Forty is really dang high. It's not that they can't tell the difference, they just don't really think about it until someone brings it up. If I didn't have a rope to tell me when I was at 20', truthfully, my feet were at more like 18.5' or so, I would've guessed I was about 80' or so with my fear of heights. Obviously, I exaggerate, but I do bet a lot of people think they are at 30' when they are really at 20'. The woods looks different off of the ground. Then of course is the macho factor that adds an extra ten feet to the height they claimed to be.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Usually 20-25'. But if I'm hunting a cutover/planted pines, I love to pick out a big ol pine tree on the edge and climb as high as I can in order to see down into the cover. It goes without saying that i wear a harness from the ground up and I feel completely comfortable doing it.

As someone said earlier, most folks are terrible at estimating heights and I'm betting that's a lot of it. For my job, I estimate/design scaffolding for construction sites and have been doing it for almost 15 years. Nearly daily, I run across two types of people. Those who look at a height of 60' and call it 20' and those who look at 15' and call it 75'.
If voting made any difference, they wouldn’t let us do it.-Mark Twain

Usually climb at least 20 if there isn't a canopy. If there is I just go as high as I can get (I hunt a 25 year old pine plantation so usually 18 to 20 is about as high as I can get before I get to limbs). If it's a nice big old growth, wide, straight pine I go around 30. I've got some old growth pines picked out overlooking clear cuts where I plan on going around 40. I've used my range finder to confirm my 30 foot climbs. I really think going high helps with scent, and I mean a whole lot.
I wouldn't climb that high without a treewalker, though. Those spikes don't let go of the tree without some force. Always make sure to climb nice and slow and deliberate.

I prefer to be extremely high when possible. Nothing outrageous, but I've climbed high enough a few times in the past that it felt dangerous. I have used a 50' parachute cord for years and years, and I think only once did I get near that. Climbing 40-ish' would usually be in a pine on a clearcut.
I enjoy being about 20' in a white oak just at the limbs. Really like if I can climb up to the limbs and have my upper body above the limb(s) when I stand up (for cover).

I use to do it in my younger days (40' +) but no more. I'm too old to climb that high. I look back and realize how blessed I was to do that without wearing a safety harness. I referred to it as the Pine Tree Rodeo. I'd see a lot of deer doing it. I admit I did some stupid ass things back in the day hunting but now prefer to stalk hunt. When I do climb a tree it's anywhere from 12-15 ft up.
I came, I saw, so I killed them all......Vern

I like getting between 20' and 25'. But I'll go higher if it's better cover and view. The only time I would ever get to 40' would be overlooking a clear cut. I have a 20' foot rope that I pull my backpack up with. When it gets tight I stop climbing. logged on to say same thing. but I think mine is 25'. dales hunting hoist. whatever length the strap in it is. of course its on my backpack, so I guess that's another couple of feet off the platform. if I have to start pulling my bow up off the ground, its time to stop climbing

I had one tree I climbed 40'. It was in a beaver pond. The first ten ft was to get to ground level when my plot that was inside a clearcut. When I got to 40', I could see the beaver dams, a hay field behind a clear cut and The edge of 50 acres of planted pines. I usually climb as high as needed to see , but no further. When bow hunting seldom over 20'. The higher you go the angle grows and target window decreases on a deer that is 20 yards or less from you.

20-25 is about as far as I climb. Have rarely if ever seen a need to go any higher X2 Dr. B

20 is my minimum, I prefer 25 if the canopy situation allows, and sometimes 30. I do have a spot where the tree won't allow me to go over 12 but it is the only tree in the right spot. I'm gonna kill a 150 inch buck out of it someday.

I usually climb between 20' and 30'. My pull rope is 30' and when it gets tight I feel like that's high enough. Like others have said, the situation dictates how high I climb. Sometimes 15' is all you need.
