I'd just like to see 20 deer in a field once. The best we do is 6 to 8. That's rare. Don't think standing corn is a magic wand of some kind. You can't see big numbers if you don't have big numbers.

This is totally my opinion (based on my experiences): if you still have lots of standing corn come late January/early February, you should see more than 6-8 deer on it on a cold, clear afternoon hunt...Yes, it definitely depends on the deer density on/around your property, but it's unbelievable to see the power of standing corn in late season! Deer still have a lot of food in the woods right now, but they will rely heavily on that corn when cold weather sets in and there's not much other food available for them.

Our farmers left a small patch for us and I wonder if there's still a single kernel left in there. I haven't walked thru it, but looking in from the edge, it looks like every ear is stripped clean. The deer keep coming tho. I wish we had a bigger patch. This one is probably only about an acre or maybe less. CD.

I love that we can plant corn for no other reason than for hunting, bushhog it, kill deer over it, etc., but a GW will write a citation if he finds a bag put on the ground because you're "hunting with the aid of bait."

Corn rules. Deer, coons, all critters.

My son stripped a cob of ours and threw the loose kernels right by our shooting house steps. I've been worried about getting a ticket ever since.

We had a 3 acre corn field that really made good this year. The deer ate
every kernel before bow season.

central ala,
Im calling BS!!! If you think you fool some people, that's fine. But we all are not going for it! Corn, or any food, when provided to deer 24 hrs a day will make them nocturnal. It has nothing to do with people walking in checking a feeder or refilling it. Nothing to do with human presence. Its the food that makes them nocturnal.

I sat on a corn field this afternoon that hadn't been hunted this year. As luck would have it, today was the neighbor and friends decided to work their quail dogs. But that did not stop 7 of those nocturnal goats from coming out in the field DURING DAYLIGHT!

Personally, I think he is 2.5, maybe 3.5 at the oldest. He's long legged, no girth in the belly or chest and a long nose. This is on a farm that I own and while not necessarily a requirement, I prefer them to get to at least 4.5 before we kill them. He could be a really good one with a little more age.

If you think that's a two year old you'll never kill a deer there.

Just curious as to what you age him at Matt. I would vote for 3.5. Only thing that makes him potentially 4 is the brisket showing some in the side view. But I'm not expert for sure. What say you?

I say he is minimum 3, and I want to say 4. It is all going to depend on what stage of the rut they are in. I have no idea where this deer is from, but 2 ain't an option.

Due to the drought we had and lack of anything green going into fall, most deer I am seeing are in poor condition, and the bucks I have watched and know the ages on look a year or two younger than their actual age just due to stress this year. Our 4 year olds are averaging what our 3 year olds weigh in a normal year, and I have not seen a deer yet with a swelled up neck, even the older ones. They are just not filled out this year. Largest deer we've killed is 172 lbs and that's just not normal. I can't imagine what they are going to look like at the end of the season.

From first of season till 10 days ago we had does coming out before dark almost every day. One day I watched 3 feed for an hour before dark. Had an 8pt and a spike come out at 4:30 three weeks ago. This after dark crap has only been going on 10 days now. So the corn didn't make that happen. Theyve had food right there for well over a year now all the time. We have a couple of weeks every year about this time where we just don't see deer in our field during the day. Two other people who hunt within 1/2 mile or so of me are going through the same thing. A mile or so away, they're still coming out regular right before dark.

We've killed plenty of mature bucks on this farm. That 8 point aint even close to being mature. Hell, my 14 year old son passed him twice before I did. He knows he's not mature. Thanks for your insight though. Very valuable.

We usually plant in late April/early May. The deer really don't hit it too hard until it gets cold. That may be a little misleading though as we do have a lot of other food sources for them. But when it gets cold, it's ON! They can't stay out of it. And for whoever said it makes them nocturnal, I hope he wasn't being serious.
