So my 02 Ford F250 water pump started leaking, and i replaced it. In doing so, i had to remove the radiator, in which required the removal of the transmission cooler lines. Upon finishing the replacement, i forgot to check the transmission fluid. my son drives my truck the next day and the transmission starts slipping. I check the fluid level and its not touching the dip stick. I add fluid, and all returns to normal except i have no low end torque, a definite slipping. RPM's have to build up to 2500 or so to move. had a guy look at it and he said fluid is burned, probably clutches. Now for my question, whats the mechanics thoughts on rebuild verses jasper replacment?

I'm thinking rebuild for costs savings, but it appears that there aren't many around rebuilding transmissions anymore.

I'm thinking rebuild for costs savings, but it appears that there aren't many around rebuilding transmissions anymore. I've heard the same recently (that replacing is better than rebuilding), but don't quote me on that. I'd price both out and see which is better price wise. Make sure if you go the rebuild route, that it is from a REPUTABLE transmission guy!

A1 performance transmission. Upgrades everything that the factory didn't. I've spent countless hours researching parts and turning wrenches and close to $6k on my early 99 7.3 f250 over the past 3months from engine seals and parts, transmission parts, performance parts, lift, diagnostic software, etc. This project came about due to a trans issue from overheating and puking out all the trans fluid and snowballed downhill from there. I've learned quite a bit and talked with several people and retailers about the powertrokes. When my trans gives up the final ghost it'll be gone thru and rebuilt by a1 performance transmission in Georgia. Chris is a 4r100 guru. Price is close to $4k for him to do it himself(includes converter and everthing)but he'll ship you a trans if you want to install it yourself. I'll keep doing all my on engine work and diagnostics but my trans is going to him. RiffRaff diesel and dieselorings is your best places to call on 7.3 parts, etc. Customer service from both are oustanding. I'm fond of my old powerstroke and justified the finances to go towards it due to it having less than a 2 yrd old paintjob and exterior parts on it from being damaged in a tornado. Plus it's a workhorse without all the new fandangled electronics like the new diesels. Will be building a spare motor to have it ready to go in when this one goes out. Which hopefully isn't soon. By the way whichever route you take i would definitly put in a 6.0 trans cooler and aftermarket gauges(i like isspro ev2 series)when you vet the trans redone. Simple bolt in design like the factory 7.3 cooler but 3 times the size and just an idea of it's efficiency,my temps before would run about 170 -190 sometimes over 200. Now they run 130-140.

Just a thought,if you've got the time and willing to spend $200 you could go get 5gl bucket of atf fluid(mercon) a motorcraft filter(yours will have a long pickup on the filter),transmission funnel, about 10ft of 7/16 clear tubing(any kind) and change out the entire system and see exactly how bad the filter and magnet looks. Who knows you might buy you some more mileage. Any questions on how to do the complete flush there's very easy info to follow on the powerstroke forums.

This is a 4R100 transmission. I have a guy that worked for ford for years that works for a different business now that is going to price it for me. I've known him a long time and he's a good mechanic. We're going to discuss the options.

Since we are on the subject, about what would be the cost of a rebuild vs. replace on an F150 instead of F250?
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
