Never held a tikka before. Interesting. Me neither till I bought one of the Tikka T3 Hunters in 7mag from Euro optics.I really like it.Very accurate and mild recoil to be so light in a magnum caliber. The one and only thing I don't care for on it is the plastic magwell and magazine.Just feels cheap

Gotta go Model SEVEN in .308! Just because I fell in love with the Model seven a few years back and STILL the best fit ive found in any make/madel.
Don't worry about the MULE, just load the WAGON!

Ditto....I'd get a Model 7 CDL in .308 from Bud's Gun Shop.... $550
No reason to tote around a long action in a .308.
In .270 I might look at Tikka. Ruger American in .308 Short Action or .270 Long at CDNN right now for under $300 new. Both in some kinda camo finish. That's a deal.

Within your price range, I think a Tikka is the way to go. I don't personally own one but have handled them and think they offer the best trigger and they are accurate from all reports I have heard.
I have Remingtons, Winchesters and a few Commercial Mauser 98 action guns. I would not recommend a new Remington because the trigger they use now is a worthless POS. Replace the trigger for about another $150 and you have a good rifle. Winchester M70's are above your price range but I really like them. Commercial Mauser 98 type guns - great guns for those like me who enjoy nostalgia but don't even go there...

Hold and look at all ya can. I started out with a full size 30-06 and used it only for a lot of years. Since then I learned I really prefer small compact rifles much better, and in short action calibers. Find whatever suits you best and give it a try. I am partial to the Model 7's myself. Ditto....I'd get a Model 7 CDL in .308 from Bud's Gun Shop.... $550 The Buds $550 model 7 isnt a CDL its a misprint. The CDL is in the $750 range at buds. I always learned with buds to not go by picture or description. Always go by the model # they have listed in the add. In that case its a 85914 which is the standard blued/syn stocked model.

Good observation. I'd still go with Model 7 if I went with .308. Hard to beat a nice compact rifle for Alabama deer hunting especially if you are hunting from a stand.
Last time I was in Mark's they had several nicer than what has been mentioned used rifles in your price range. You might want to check down there and gun shops in Trussville like Birmingham Pistol Wholesale unless you just have to have brand new one.
