I am having a serious problem with wild turnips and need a herbicide to kill it. I'm gonna do it after season so I am not worried about killing everything. I used a tiller this year and they have gotten worse. Gly doesn't seem to phase it unless I need to up the amount that I use, which kills everything else slowly, about 2 ounces to the gallon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Stoney get you some 2-4d herbicide. Turnips is a broadleaf and gly is not effective on broad leaf plants. Be sure to kill them before they go to seed.

If you have hard water (lots of minerals) it can really reduce the effectives of your gly as the minerals bond with the gly as soon as you mix it in the tank. I have been using spray grade Ammonium Sulfate as a water conditioner and had great success with it. The recommended mixing rate is 17lb of powder per 100 gallons of water. If you condition your water first, there's not much that will survive a 3 or 4% gly solution. But I would also trust the recommendation above for 2,4D. If you are growing some gly resistant weeds, that should help end the problem. I spray a mixture of 1% gly and 1% 2,4D on the sides of our forest roads and I can't see anything that survives it.

Put plenty of surfactant or crop oil in with the 2,4 D.
I would think Gly would kill the piss out of them. I do similar to what yelp suggested. I use citric acid instead of Am Sulfate.

Don't believe any of it. The turnips will still be there long after you are dead and gone. I've got several fields of them, and have killed them year after year, but they always come back the next year stronger than ever. Its worse than kudzu.

That is not what I wanted to hear. They are tough as nails but I have got to at least thin them out some. They smother out just about everything you plant.

I've posted this pic before, but look at it closely. This pic was made 2 or 3 weeks ago, long before it rained. I planted the patch mid September, and got a nice rain right after. It all came up with a good stand, but after 2 months of no rain, it's all dead except the turnips. They are able to survive anything. This is an upland field and it's had turnips since the 80s when my dad planted feed wheat in it. It's been sprayed with Weedmaster 7 or 8 times over the years, but there is such a seed bank there that I have given up. It will be a pretty field of solid turnips after this rain. Don't believe it when people say the deer won't eat them- they will if they are hungry. I've seen a lot of deer in it this fall, and there is nothing there but stunted turnips. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Are the wild turnip seeds sort of like cockle burr seeds in that they will continue to be fertile after being underground for years? For sure. I have completely killed the tops out of this field many times, but there is so much seed in the ground that you can't tell any difference the next fall. I've also tried using 2-4,Db a few weeks after planting in an attempt to kill the turnips without killing the clover. It definitely has an effect on them and reduces the turnips in the plot for that season, but you still have to do it every year, and it won't kill them all the way Weedmaster does. It wasn't an option this year because of the drought, but that's the best program I've found to control them. But I've given up controlling them and just decided to live with them. Deer will eat them, and really cold weather knocks them back so that they aren't too bad in January. The sad thing is that we could have easily killed them out the first year they appeared. There wasn't that many plants and we could have wiped them out with a hand sprayer. The deer were eating them, so my dad decided to just see what they would do. I would have slipped in at night and sprayed them if I'd only known how bad they are. Take no mercy on them if these appear in your plots.

BTW, I missed a nice buck during ml season in the patch in the pic. I had to hold that 9 pound rifle up several minutes, and then eventually had to shoot offhand at about 125 yds and shot right over him. I've got a good excuse, but no deer. He was going to a doe that was eating those sorry looking turnips. Deer will eat them for sure.

I didn't realize they were prolific enough seeders to be a problem for years and year. I don't have any in my fields at home but have dealt with it in the past. The best way to handle them would be to plant cereal grains only and treat the fields AS NEEDED at least annually with 2,4 D or even better with Grazon. If you use 2, 4 D it will likely take more than one application to gain control in a year.
You'd have to forego planting any broadleaf plants in the plots. Clover, etc....
I had planned to spray my plots with Grazon this year due to henbit in previous years but probably won't due to the late start with the drought. 2,4 D nor Grazon will kill grasses but either one will stunt them. No time for stunting this year.
