GameCheck needs an extra line for the deer's name. Maybe in 2017.

Same reason people name roads and food plots on hunting clubs. Naming roads and food plots is a way, especially on large properties, to have specific identifiers for hunters. "Go down the Pothole Road through the pines, take the second left on the Skidder Trail and then you'll be in the Jones Plot" can help someone not get lost or be able to call for assistance with more certainty. Same reasoning for naming deer. "Don't shoot so and so" or "shoot so and so". If I bring a guest,I'm definitely showing him/her pics of what bucks he/she should be looking for or passing. Sorry, but we're not a "brown it's down" club and everyone can't score/age deer on the hoof as good as you or the OP can. The fact that you let this bother you is pretty telling. I forsee many roadrage incidents in your/OP's future. Why are you acting like anyone is mad? I don't have any rage. You sure to protest how important it is to name your deer. If you have a guest that can't age or score a deer, do you really think they can tell one deer from another from a picture you showed them? Come on. If it makes you feel better, go for it. Apartment, the deer namers like you think no one can have an opinion other than bowing to your awesomeness and superior hunting skills. I don't know how any of the rest of us non namers ever make it.

You don't know anything about me or the OP, so don't assume. It doesn't bother me. I just think it's goofy as chit, as are "hit lists." I'm not into naming animals other than pets. Identifying bucks with specific characteristics and photos for guests to not shoot is fine. I've been to places where I was shown photos and we discussed antlers, droopy ear, whatever. But the host didn't call them DingleBalls or Whoopie Spike or some other name.

It is common place on properties where selective harvest is practiced and folks don't kill every legal buck they see. A lot of places have a hit list and you damn well better not shoot one not on the list. It is a lot of fun and a challenge to target a particular buck. It's not like we're all hunter gatherers trying to feed our tribe We typically name a few that are shoot and some that are no-shoot. We use real complicated names like - "Big-6","Half-Rack", "Young-8", "Odd-6", and the ultimate "Monster-10". We used to have a pretty good idea of the bucks that stayed in the area, of course deer move around and it is impossible to know what may show up. But, we had a reasonable idea of what was there - and we agreed what bucks would be taken and what bucks would get a pass.

I have hunted in several states, and on some very, very high dollar property where I was shown pictures too. One where they said don't pull the trigger unless you know it is 4 and scores over 150. Guess what, I never shot a deer there. Took pictures of a bunch, including some they ask why I didn't shoot. Never once did they tell me the deers name. Having grown up with a farm, I was taught as a toddler not to name an animal you are going to kill. We didn't name cows or chickens and I don't name deer. Do you tell your kids, they are having dingleballs for dinner?

Years ago, not long after we had moved to the country, a friend of my wife's gave her 1st farm animal, a piglet. When she decided she was going to name it, I told her it's name was bar-b-que and when it got to about 250 lbs. sure enough, it turned into bar-b-que, pork chops and sausage

I'd be thankful that life is going so well that something so "stupid" as folks naming deer bothered me. Amen Yep X5. And I've been naming turkeys for as long as I can remember

Many years ago a friend killed a deer on the place we both hunt that is the biggest we've ever killed. It is an 11 pt that scored 173 typical and some change. Just short of qualifying for the B&C books. Anyways a couple of days later, while I was eating lunch at Hancock's a couple of guys asked about it. I had a picture and showed them. I didn't know that our neighboring landowner, who is well known for tying one on every evening, was sitting behind me. Later that night, somehow he tracked me down to my girlfriend's (now wife) parent's house by phone. His speech was slurred and he was obviously lit. He was fussing about not telling anyone about that deer because we will never be able to keep poachers away. He said they have been letting him go so he could be a breeder. Said they named him Fred. All I could do is respond "Well Fred's dead." [img:center] [/img] Fred is on the right.

I call every male turkey and deer....."Fred". Always have. It's starting to drive my 8 year old crazy, but it's just funny to me.
Except for that one turkey I named "Einstein". That was a bad experience to get to that point. Hell when I say a big ole roach at camp I say "Hey there goes Fred!" Wife hates that lololol

I don't see enough of them to name them. I probably would though. I named a pig we raised pork chop.
