Truglo SSX and federal heavyweight 7s is a very deadly combo.

depending on barrel length there are a couple choices on choke. I do agree with the fed heavyweight 7's though. mine is the youth model with 18" barrel and it ended up liking the .575 best.

Truglo SSX and federal heavyweight 7s is a very deadly combo. Thanks! Check the "pattern" thread pinned to the top of the forum. Lot's of good info in there. Will do depending on barrel length there are a couple choices on choke. I do agree with the fed heavyweight 7's though. mine is the youth model with 18" barrel and it ended up liking the .575 best. Right now it's got a full length barrel on it... but I'm trying to decide whether to go with a shorter one. It's a matter of working with what I have or doing some buying / swapping to get what I want.

regular length "most likely" will like a little tighter constriction than a short barrel like mine. I would start with a 565 and go from there. If you go with the heavy 7's make sure the choke isn't ported and doesn't strip the wad. you got to remember those have the flight control wad in them. go over to Old Gobbler and search around there also. lots of info. I ended up with a trulock 575. they were great to work with and let me purchase/send back chokes till I got what worked for my gun. if you call them and tell them what you have and what shell you want to shoot then they can get you started.

yep, and good luck. maybe some others will chime in too. That's a common gun these days and there is lots of info/combo's out there to look at. just remember that just because a choke worked for x gun doesn't mean it will work with johnny's x gun. it can get you on the right track but I have found shotguns can be a lot like women lol

for kids I would not make it a 50 yard gun with an extra tight pattern. I've used a mod choke for kids, limited to closer range for inexperienced shooters and gun handlers.

I haven't set up an 870 with the factory shells, but I did a lot of shooting with a couple of 1187 Compact 20s with the 21" barrel. One threw an awesome pattern (and the best of the two guns) with a Hastings .562 with Heavyweight 7, Hevishot 7, and every combination of Nitros. The other gun performed best with a Carlson's .575.

Not those, but I did try the 2.75" 1 1/4 oz HW 7 in my son's gun and found it to be a good 30 yd shell, which if you are setting it up for a kid is probably fine. I wound up going with the Hevishot 7s, 1 1/4 oz, for the added pattern density. My son killed 8 with that combo before moving on to heavier Nitro and HW 7 loads.
