Hello, I'm new to deer hunting and was hoping someone could give a general idea where would be a good place to hunt in the Shelby County Alabama area.

Okay, how big is that? Not asking for your spot, but is there a particlular area that is better?

It's plenty big, just print a map off the internet and go put feet on the ground. It will take a lot of walking and scouting to find spots to consistently kill deer

I've been on the southside near my home and seen a few, but I think that either they have been harvested or moved on with the recent drought.

In this area is it better to stalk or stand?

It's bow only except a few weekends out of the year, so it's easier to use a stand or blind in my opinion.

Okay, so is the William S. Ireland management area part of the Cahaba Management area part of that? That is where I have gone a several times in the past.

I will give the Cahaba Management area a go soon.

William Ireland is cahaba wma, they are one in the same. Everyone just calls it cahaba.

From what I have heard it can't be bow only. There are so many shots. I have heard many single shots only to see a pick up leave when I do and see a massive rack sticking up out of a pick up truck bed.

Not angry about it, just slightly envious. Wish I had taken their deer with my bow.

It's not bow only. Go to outdooralabama.com, where to hunt, WMA,and print the PDF map of cahaba (William Ireland) This will show you all the dates of the rifle hunts and the rules that are specific to the wma. There is an A side and a B side that differ as well. The cahaba refuge that lies INSIDE the wma and it is bow only. If I can help you send me a pm.

I said bow only except for a few weekend gun hunts, which is true. If you're hearing gun shots on it other than those weekends, someome is breaking the law.

Or, small game hunting, or shooting at the range if it is back open.

I used to hunt a lot on cahaba back about 9 to 10 years ago before they started cutting everything. If you are willing to put the feet on the ground and get in there you will see plenty of deer. Get you a deer cart for sure and put bike tires on it. Good luck.
