My sister is traveling through the area. She actually saw a helicopter fly over the road with a big bucket attached....assuming it was a part of the fire fighting efforts. Come on rain!

I at Gatlinburg now you can't see 300 to 400 yards in the middle of town looks like a heavy fog. Dang, my mom is going there with a tour group this week.

Its not just gatlinburg, its the national park. Most of the hiking trails have been shut down and elkmont and places in the area closed... alot of history will be lost if they loose those structures

Looks to be close to pigeon forge now. Gatlinburg is starting to get a little rain but I think it's too far gone now. Prayers to all affected
There is 2 different high fence. 1 small and one big! Mine was free range in the big pen and was not a breeder buck. Why does it have to be twisted around??

We've lost power and have just enough battery for this final update for the night. Rain has finally arrived! Another band of rain should follow this one as well. Winds should die down overnight. So we're hopeful that with the rain and diminishing wind it will help the numerous firefighter crews suppress these fires. reports are that, as of this morning, Ober Gatlinburg has been destroyed (per a local news station). also hearing that a lot of the chalet neighborhoods up Ski Mountain Road have heavy damage (many just gone). The article I read said it was "approaching the Park Headquarters" (Sugarlands Visitor Center) but didn't mention any damage to it (yet).
Apparently a lot of the homes and buildings up Airport Road, behind the space needle and heading up toward the Park Vista and Roaring Fork, have burned or are burning. Knoxville News Sentinel is reporting the Park Vista is "on fire" but hasn't said to what extent.
The entire Spur (area between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge) has apparently burned or is in the process of burning.
The chair lift in town in Gatlinburg is reported to have been destroyed and one article I read said the old Gatlinburg Inn next to it may have been damaged but not sure to what extent...
take all of the above with a grain of salt because it's hard to get any definitive info right now...

Pretty sure that little wedding chapel they've been showing is the one where my wife and I got married. It looks like a bad situation up there. I can only imagine what those high winds would do to a fire like that.

You'd think you could trust reports from sources like TEMA and the Knoxville News Sentinel but I don't think anyone actually knows what's going on. glad it's ok. Hopefully some of the other reports from the last 12 hours or so are exaggerated, but I'm afraid a lot of them aren't.

So is it still burning or did the rain put it out? The report I read a couple of hours ago from the National Park Service said that fires were still burning and they anticipate them getting worse this afternoon. The rain was not enough to knock them down, and they are expecting low humidity and increasing winds this afternoon.

I have a couple of co-workers who both own timeshares in Westgate. It sounds like Westgate got hit pretty hard. Yeah, I think Westgate is pretty much a total loss...obviously you can't see all the other buildings behind the main one, but the way the fire was moving down the mountain, I gotta think most everything behind this one probably burned too.

I don't mean to sound insensitive here so I don't want to come across that way. But, I'm having a hard time finding out any answers as far as upcoming trips there. We were supposed to go Dec 17 - 20 and stay in the Gatlinburg Inn. Obviously they are saying that downtown is intact, but I'm doubtful they will have everything up and running by then. It's part of a graduation present for my woman, so I had hoped to get a feel for the situation as far as tourism goes so I can make alternate plans.
Has anyone heard anything from anyone who is planning on taking the trip up there in the next couple weeks?

I think your best bet would be to call the hotel directly and see what's going on....or potentially the Gatlinburg Tourism Bureau I'll try the Tourism Bureau. It's not a big deal as far as the money. We can worry about that later on. I mean obviously they have bigger fish to fry. I hate it for them too. That place has a lot of good memories for me.

Might also try getting in touch with Sugarlands Visitor Center (Park Headquarters) for park-related info. Not sure if they're back open yet or not. I'll do that too. I tried calling a few places but wasn't able to get through. I figured either no power or I wasn't the only one calling. I feel bad even calling about it right now given the circumstances.

I am going next Wednesday thru Friday. Going to Dollywood and do a little shopping. May just cruise through Gatlinburg if we can to see .. but will be mostly in Pigeon Forge.

I would guess by early/mid next week it should start getting easier to get people on the telephone. I know a lot of the phone lines were down at one point along with power in general in some places. but those will be some of the first things addressed. If you do twitter and/or facebook, you can follow both the tourism bureau and the official facebook/twitter for GSMNP. they post quite a bit of useful info. the GSMNP Twitter is especially good for up-to-the-minute stuff like road/trail/campsite closures in the park and stuff like that.

I don't mean to sound insensitive here so I don't want to come across that way. But, I'm having a hard time finding out any answers as far as upcoming trips there. We were supposed to go Dec 17 - 20 and stay in the Gatlinburg Inn. Obviously they are saying that downtown is intact, but I'm doubtful they will have everything up and running by then. It's part of a graduation present for my woman, so I had hoped to get a feel for the situation as far as tourism goes so I can make alternate plans.
Has anyone heard anything from anyone who is planning on taking the trip up there in the next couple weeks? Have you considered taking her to Ashville? Beautiful city. Not quite a touristy as Gatlinburg and a little more upscale. Plus I'll bet she would like to see the Biltmore all decked out for Christmas.

I figured that was the case. Most of the calls I have made have gone to a dead line. I assumed it was because they were fielding a lot of calls.

We had mainly thought about Helen GA if not Gatlinburg, but that is a good idea so I'll look into it. She likes that stuff.

Check out how close the fire got the Ogle Cabin up Roaring Fork...based on that burnt area being behind the house, I'm guessing the mill that you can hike to about half a mile behind the cabin is gone.

Maggie Valley is an option to Gatlinburg. Great mountain views without the Ripleys Western Carolina is our go to place in the mountains now. Haven't been to Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge area in years. I guess it has a lot to do with the fact that I just really don't like the majority of people.
