I have a 150 gallon drum mounted with a pump and sprayer that I can shoot out to 50-60 feet. On a typical 1/4 acre food plot how much water would you consider spraying maybe 2-3 times a week to get some growth. Water is coming out of our well so no big water bill there, but just wondering how many gallons would you think is appropriate. We haven't had rain in over 6 weeks here and seed has been covered.

Someone posted the math on this recently, basically, you are wasting your time...you will never get close to the amount of water that a good rain would provide.

We tried that one year with a water pump in the creek with fire hoses running to our plots. We flooded the plots but it didn't last but a few days. I wouldn't waste your time.

It would be interesting if you could spray one patch and not the other and document the results. Of coarse after you started spraying it would come a monsoon!!

Found the info. 1" of water over 1 acre equates to 27154 gallons. So, you would need to do around 3400 gallons of watering just to simulate 1/2" rainfall event.

If you do the math of how much water is in a cubic inch you can then determine how much water you need to equal actual rainfall amount. Basically, there are 144 cubic inches in a 1/12 a cubic foot which would equal an inch of rain on a square foot of ground. There are 43,500 or so cubic feet in an acre. So, .004329 gallons per cubic inch x 43500 x 144 = 27,117 gallons needed to equal one inch of rainfall on an acre of land. So, 1/4 acre is 6779 gallons divided by 150 gallon is 45 trips with your 150 gallon drum. However, if you only want half an inch then you are looking at 22.5 trips with your 150 gallon drum and around 10 drums for a 1/4 inch.

Don't do it. The seed is dormant. If you water it and you don't get rain soon after it sprouts it will die and you will have to reseed.

Good deal to show the math. But you could just type into Google, "convert acre inch rain into gallons" and it will give you the answer.

No matter how you figure it, trying to irrigate a wildlife plot is not worth the trouble. It will rain again someday.

I'm not going to say it is a waste of time. From what I have seen with our plots, if you can get enough water on it to make it germinate and keep watering it for the first few weeks there are heavy enough dews to keep it going. Our plots got 1/4" the night we planted them and then went 26 days without rain. Somehow they are still green. I would concentrate a smaller area in a stategic location and not the total 1/4 acre plot.

We got probably 1/10" of rain and it wasn't even enough to cause germination.

In a draught situation,,, the water table below the surface of your plots gets lowered,, to satisfy the water needs of your food plots you would first have to raise the water table in your plots ,,,, any water you spray will be drawn too deep to do much good for your plots,,,

however ,,, if done on a daily basis,,, you could sustain the plots until the earth drenching rains come,,,

As long as Elijah's not praying smile I couldn't imagine it not raining for 3 years.

Math is right, terminology is wrong. Cubic feet is a unit of measure for volume. You're looking for SQUARE feet, which is a unit of measure for area.
