Has anyone had any experience with jack Russells as tracking dogs? I have a 9 month old pup I've been working with. I've done some goggle searches about jacks tracking and all I've read is alot of African ph use them with good results.

Probably not going to find many folks using a Jack Russell around here. Seems like one of the speakers at the first tracking convention I went to talked about them being used in Africa. I remember him saying that they were extremely courageous dogs when they found something still alive….like to the point of being fearless. From what I’ve read about other dogs….terriers don’t have quite as good of a cold nose as a hound. You may find that a track over 24 hrs old is too much for it….maybe not.

i had a jack russel mixed with a hound, he was super short but muscled up, weighed 50 lbs. Nobody believed he weighed that much. But i seen him on the scales at the vet. Had a pretty good nose, and was totally fearless. Size ment nothing to him, whether it was a horse, 2 full grown wolves, a huge english bulldog. He would get at that azz. I miss ol snoop snoop

I've known some PJRTs that made great trackers. And would fight a bulldozer. Get the hunting blood, not the house pet.

If your going to go for a smaller breed of tracker, get a daushund. Short legs that you can keep up with and an unbelievable nose. They are fearless like the JR with a lot less energy to have to get rid of when not hunting. I understand that is the preferred breed by trackers up north.

Mine isn't a tracker, but I can attest to his nose. He can smell a dang lizard across my yard with the wind at his back. No idea why, but he hates a lizard worse than anything. A mole is a distant second.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

The dachshund being used for tracking is a German wire-haired dachshund. That was by far the most common dog at the national trackfest.

Thanks for the advice. My Jr isn't quite as wild as most are. I think that helps him stay focused when we're tracking. I put a harness and leash on him then put him in a back pack with his head out of the zipper and take him to the scene of the crime. He has a pretty good nose. He's not a blood hound but he's great with my family and very protective of my kids. I not really planning on putting him on alot of 24 hour old trails I really wanted one I can take to camp with me and use hours after the shoot or the next morning. I have ran out of blood so I've been dragging pieces of cube steak and letting is sit for 2 to 4 hours. Idk but it seams like scent and blood really dries up fast in this heat.

The scenting conditions play a huge role in how hard a track is to follow. Dogs need moisture in the air to really be able to pick up scent well. Very dry conditions make for hard tracking. A 12 hr old track in very dry, windy conditions may give the dog much more trouble than a 24 hr old track in very good tracking conditions. One of the reasons some people prefer to track at night is because scenting conditions are better. The middle of the day usually sucks. I like to track right after daylight when there's dew on the ground.

That's kinda what I figured. If it would freaking rain here I'd be in better shape. I watered down some blood last week and tracked it 11 hours later and he really struggled . I could tell by his body language he was really struggling to stay on the trail. He knew it was there just couldn't stay on it but all that was later in the evening. Might lay a track after this rain tonight and track it before work tomorrow.

I've seen some very good deer hounds, and i mean damn good, have a hard time tracking in hot dry conditions. I'm talking about in the wild, not in the yard. I think it has something to do with the amount of particles in the air that dont allow them to smell as good. It dont have to be meat you use to train them either, if there young. You just want something to make them learn how to use there nose,

Got my first tracking call for Remington,my fist year tracking dog. Took him out, put him on the trail and hour and 15 minutes after the shot and he had no problems. It was about a 90 yard track. Couldn't be happier and prouder of him. All the hard work over the last year have started to pay off.

Went on track number 3 tonight and rim made quick work of it . Good hit with very little blood around 100 yards through some thick thick stuff. We made an attempt to track a gut shot deer last weekend but there was absolutely no blood or gut anywhere and there where about 15 deer that scattered after the shot and we struggled to pick-up the wounded deers scent.that makes us 2 for 3. Looking forward to the next track.
