Is this the incident y'all were talking about? Courtesy of USA Today High School Sports. Maplesville can make a lot of big schools look bad. May be the only 1A team to ever have three players in the NFL at the same time. Quite a program.
A strange turn of events midway through the second half of an interstate football matchup Friday night led the visiting team to walk away early.
In a game at Maplesville (Ala.) High School, the Northgate (Fla.) football team forfeited with 1:40 to play in the third quarter of a 21-0 defeat.
With Northgate trailing by that 21-point margin late in the third, the game was stopped after Northview coach Derek Marshman received consecutive unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Those two penalties prompted immediate ejection.
At that point, Northview High Principal Gayle Weaver walked out of the stands and onto the field to speak with the referees. After some discussion, the game was called, giving Maplesville the win with still a quarter-plus remaining in the contest.
In a statement from Northview’s Quarterback Club to the Atmore Advance, the organization said Weaver took a “stand” for the players.
“After some events that took place on the field tonight, our principal took a stand for our players for them to return to the bus prior to the fourth quarter,” the statement said. “This is for our players’ safety. We completely stand behind her decision and apologize to our players and supporters for this unforeseen chain of events.”
The FHSAA, Florida’s governing body for high school sports, is planning to look into the situation.
It is unclear what events led to the Northview coach’s penalties followed by the principal’s conversation and the visiting team leaving the field, but Maplesville head coach Brent Hubbert did see the game as a teachable moment for his players,
“We just talked about sportsmanship and reiterated the behavior that we make sure we condone in our program,” Hubbert told the Clanton Advertiser.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
