A little over 2 weeks ago I had 8" of my sigmoid colon (lower intestine) removed due to chronic colitis and diverticulitis. I also had an umbilical hernia repaired. I'm posting this partly to inform those that may consider it of what they can expect and partly to get advice from those that have had it done.

I've had a lot of surgeries before including a total knee back in February so I thought I'd do well but Oh my gawsh ... this one kicked my butt. I still can barely eat, diet is mostly potatos/yogurt/milk. I've lost 18 lbs but seem to have leveled off now that I'm eating a little better. I have 'emergencies' 5 or 6 times a day ... They can be almost comical at times ...

For example, I thought I could go for a few hours without issue and decided to go to a Life Group meeting with folks from my Church the other night. About an hour into it here it comes ... I sat out the next hour trying desperately to hide it, sitting with my cheeks squeezed together. By God's grace alone I made it. As soon as the leader prayed us out I got out and split as fast as I could. I didn't make it home, had to stop at McD's and pollute their stall LOL

Another downside is that I can't get any exercise. Over the last 9 years I haven't missed more than 5 days from the gym but this surgery and the problems that preceeded it have caused me to miss 2 solid months of gym training. This is killing me ... Now bow season is just around the corner and I'm hoping it doesn't spoil my season.

Any of you guys gone through this? What did you eat? How long did it take before you could put weight back on? How long before you could be active again? How long before you stop having 'emergencies'?

I'm still running all OEM & stock equipment thankfully. I recall hearing about a friend of my Dad's though. This guy had some of his colon removed too. Anytime he's out somewhere and has a meal, within 10-20 mins after he's looking for a toilet.

I bet ... So far I'm eating just a little at a time so that I can help manage those emergencies

Hang in there Rocket.

I had 4" of colon removed due to diverticulitis in 2000. I had been in the hospital a couple of times and finally decided to have the surgery done. I did put it off till turkey season was over grin big mistake.

My wife and I traveled to south Fl to have it done. My brother is a surgeon there and one of his partners did the surgery, my wife is a RN so I was in good hands. Four hours out of surgery wife had me up walking. Made it five feet the first time shocked Docs let me go after three days as I was staying at brothers house and had an RN to watch me.

Eating was killed at first, esp that first harder food. Thought I'd die. Got better at time went by. What didn't get better was my stamina...by noon I was worethehellout and back in bed. It took me several months to get any stamina back, and I didn't feet up to par for at least six months.

Yeah, waiting for me would have been a mistake too ... I could hardly function because the disease was chronic and pretty much constant plus I was passing a lot of blood. It had to be done.

If I had known this was going to happen I might not have spent the bucks on a new hunting club, wouldn't have put 200+ miles on my ATV getting to know the property, wouldn't have bought and refurbished a camper ... and on and on. Hindsight is 20/20 eh?

So that was 16 years ago Fred, how does it effect you now?

I had IBS all of my life till I had the surgery. NO problems after the surgery. None. NADA. If I had known how the surgery would affect me I would of had it done years before there was even a problem shocked grin

I did have a small bout of diverticulitis two years ago, but it was minor and none since then.

My FIL had his removed about five years before the big C finally took him away from us. it took him a little bit to adjust to life with a bag, but he did and managed quite well. The biggest thing I remember with him was he was always careful to eat his meals at the same time everyday. When he did this he had times when he could go without the bag and just put it on when he knew it was going to be needed.

You should already have a good idea of what foods upset your stomach and avoid them in order to minimize the ugly accidents.

I've had a couple of minor bouts of diverticulitis and thought I was dying. When they figured out what it was, the Doc told me, that when the intestines have problems, the whole body feels it. I could only imagine what it was like for you.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I am sorry for your loss. I've lost several in my family due to C ... sad stuff.

I am very lucky that I don't have to use a bag, that would make it a whole lot less manageable

Good luck

Jawbone, I woke my wife at 2am and told her we had to go to the hospital last bout I had before surgery. She figgerd I was dying if I ASKED to go to the hospital. LOL

ex had cancer. they removed a good bit and he got an ileostomy. after 6 weeks they reversed it (they should have let it stay longer). he had a lot of complications sick. (fistulas from colon surgery). going to the bath room for the next 8 months was always ""urgent"" . this was years ago and he's well now.

my pops wasn't as fortunate. he had the surgery and got mrsa. spent more time in hospitals than at home the year he died. he had the colostomy bag so can't say if he had to "rush" to the facilities.

I feel your pain and understand completely.

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at 29. Thought I was going to die and at times really wished I had. Then at 45 my body couldn't take it anymore and I had to have my entire colon removed, and yes, went on the bag. I thought it was the worst thing that had ever happened to me at the time but it really did help my quality of life. When they took out my colon they discovered that I was on of the "lucky ones" that actually had ulcerative colitis and chrons at the same time. Now I'm dealing with chrons but it's nothing like before. I have bad days and worse days now but doc says with one more surgery, I've had three so far, that everything will be better.
I've since gotten married again to a wonderful wife that has become my bowhunting and offshore fishing partner and I'm teaching my son to enjoy the same things and we are all having a ball doing it together.

So keep your head up. You will get better. You will gain weight. And you will still be able to do all of the things that you enjoyed before. It may take some time and getting used to but you will.

Sorry for the long hijack about me but I don't tell a lot of people this.

I hope that everything works out for you.

My brother (35) was diagnosed with colon cancer this past Spring. Had surgery a month ago to remove some colon and is on a permanent bag. He's adjusting to it but, due to some post surgery complications, he's been back in the hospital since Labor Day and hasn't had a chance to figure out exactly what his new "normal" will be. We're hoping he gets to go home Sunday and get that process started.

I feel for you Rocket and hope your on the road back soon. I will say after 2 weeks and then trying to venture your tough or a little foolish.

My wife has Crohn's and to say we had a tough time last year is an understatement.

Surgery one was removing 6 inches of traverse colon to remove diverticulitis, oh and while were there we will take your gall bladder. ileostomy was placed to heal properly we thought.

Didn't last long at home before we found out that the surgeon knicked the bile duct on the gall bladder procedure. Had to have a stint put in the common bile duct orally.

Then discovered that the colon resection was leaking. Our surgeon did not like that I did not have 100% confidence in his ability and referred us to another surgeon. Still not sure who fired who but it was a good thing.

2nd surgeon did another resection and while he was there he reversed the ileostomy and punctured the bowel. It was a tough year and I would not wish year 50 like that on anyone. It was just about a full year of turmoil. I truly believe if she would of had one more open surgery last year it would have killed her.

Now the good news is that she is doing very well and working out regularly. She goes about every three months and gets a remicade infusion that seems to be helping her.

My sister had it done 3 times. First was the resection by general surgeon, second to save her life after what the GS did ruptured(23 days in SICU, 6 months off work), third by a Colon specialist to get rid of the bag and put back together.

I highly recommend Alabama Colon and Rectal in Bham. Don't trust a general surgeon with a bowel resection, go to someone who does it every day.

Take it easy Rocket and let it heal. You should be ready for gun season.

Rocket, 2 years ago I had
I was blessed compared to what some have been thru with colon problems.
My oldest brother had colon surgery couple months ago.
It takes a few weeks to get back to exercise, ect.
I pray for your fast recovery. I think one of the main things is to stay motivated. It aint always easy though.
Biggest problem I had after 4 weeks, when I tried to shoot my recurve my arm/shoulder muscles were weak.
Last June I had a bone spur shaved off my shoulder and a bicep repair.
Keep on keepin on. God speed your recovery.
