We had a good time rafting the Ocoee yesterday. Spent today barnstorming the Blue Ridge Mountains in the little car. Did a little hiking on some of the trails. Fun father and son stuff. Going to eat a big breakfast at the Tapoco Lodge in the morning and hit the Tail of the Dragon, before going back to the grind on Monday...

Five finger shoes....cmon man!

Sounds like a good time. I always appreciated times like that with my dad. Still do!

Ever had bunions? Five Fingers Rule! Seriously. I have terrible bunions on both feet, and Five Fingers are some of the few shoes that don't hurt my feet after a few hours.

Plus they make great driving shoes and hiking shoes.

Irish Jr. forgot his hiking shoes so he's wearing my Keen hiking sandals.

Yeah... It's been nice.

After thinking I've somehow raised a kid that is not the least bit interested in performance cars, now after this weekend he wants to get a cheap little fixer-upper Miata as a Father - Son project for him to drive. It will be fun to get him wrenching a little.

Miatas are awesome cars.
Have you done any autocrossing with yours yet?

The dragon is a blast. Wife and I used to ride the tail all the time back before kids. I never took a car there. We always took sport bikes there. Have a blast and enjoy.

Just remember the number one rule there..... Don't cross yellow lines, stay on your side of the road.

I would rather be tried by 12, than carried by 6.

Yep... They are overlooked by some "car guys" but they are about the most fun you can have on 4 wheels. I've had 9 of them now if you include my older son's father and son project car that he totaled, if you include one that I bought Mrs. Irish, and a few fixer uppers I bought to recondition and flip.

My favorite was a 1993 that I bought from a guy at work with a leaky soft top, a hard top and a paint job that looked like pepto bismol. I took it off his hands for $1000.

I sold the hard top for $1000 on craigslist the next week after I figured out that the roof drains were stopped up and that's why the top was leaking, then I wet sanded and buffed the single stage paint out to a beautiful red. I then found a used turbocharger and built a custom intercooler turbo setup with an RX-7 intercooler, custom piping, Mustang injectors, high pressure fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator. When I finished she was pushing 200rwhp on premium pump gas after I got her all tuned up.

I added beefier sway bars, sticky Yokohamas on some light weight wheels, and Koni shocks on some custom adjustable coilovers I pieced together.

After that she was pretty dangerous in SM2 class in autocross. Me and her took a couple of firsts in our class.

That car would fly and grip the road like a cat on carpet.

Mrs. Irish and I have done it a few times when we had sport bikes and when we had the Bonnevilles. We usually avoid it because it has become a circus out there. There are better roads in the area that we usually ride on.

We did the BRP from the start to Mt. Pisgah, hiked some along the way, dropped off on 276 down toward Brevard, hit a bunch of twisties over around, Cashiers, Highlands, and Franklin. Hit some nice stuff last night on the way back and forth to Tapoco Lodge for pizza. Good pizza and beer there.

We might have crossed paths I rafted the Ocoee Saturday. That's a beautiful country up that way, go by Mercier Orchards and get some fried apple pies!

I was more taken back by the combination of stripes and plaids. I'm sure you can straighten him out by his senior year, though. laugh
Good to see you enjoying time with him.

I actually noticed that when we were getting ready yesterday morning, I just shrugged... slap One thing I am not is a fashion consultant. grin He's a good kid, makes good grades, stays out of trouble, and helps Mrs. Irish and I out around the house. I don't sweat the small stuff... grin

We hiked up to The Devil's Courthouse yesterday. This has to be one of the best views in the Appalachian Mountains.

Captain Morgan surveying his domain:

See that little green car down on the right in that parking lot way down there... Yeah... I'm doing more cardio training starting this week. About the time I was about half way up that mountain, I was thinking how nice my 4 wheeler would have been to be on. grin

I'm telling you... If we could have figured out a way to build a cabin up there that is where we would have built one, but it's just too far away to build your own cabin. Which is why we ended up building one an hour and a half away on Lookout Mountain.

If I was to live anywhere but Alabama, it would be Western North Carolina.

Mrs. Irish took her 80 year old Mom up to a B&B near Ashville, and Irish Jr. and I met them at Mt. Pisgah and they followed us down to Brevard for lunch. She brought back some nice Honey Crisp Apples.
