I am fishing in the gulf for the first time on a private pier. I am at dauphin island and I am caughting a bunch of catfish, but they are all small. What is the best bait/set up to catch bigger edible fish. Thanks for any suggestions, they will be appreciated! I'm a tennessee boy trying to salt water fish!

It's more of location rather than bait. Live or dead shrimp on a Carolina rig will work if there's anything other than catfish.

Thanks! I am using shrimp now. Maybe I will try a little kayak fishing at another location. Will post if I have any luck!

Do not eat saltwater cats. The ones you are catching are hardheads. If one fins you, you''ll regret it !!!!You can eat gafftops they have really long top fins. Id see if anyone is catching anything worth keeping. If not change locations.

I never had much luck from piers. Only caught cats.

I heard a report that they are catching white trout and reds off cedar point pier located at north end of dauphin island bridge

Lots of times if you're catching hardheads, you probably won't catch anything else in the same location. Catch a few of them, move on.

I got finned a bunch yesterday, I'm not used to these salt water cats. Thanks for the advice.

I don't know how that's possible. I got finned once and swore i would never allow one of those things within finning range ever again. One of the most painful things of my life. I almost had to go to the ER when my chest pains and shortened breath occurred. I must be a pansy or you are one tough fella.

I cut the line. The last time I got stuck I swore it wouldn't ever happen again and I meant it.
