How many of you guys use em' when hunting/scouting? I have terrible service where I hunt, was looking at some GPS, just to mark stand locations or good spots, or simply to not get lost in the woods.

What else do you use em for.

I've used a simple car GPS for hunting. Not ideal as it's not waterproof and battery life is not great. Found it to be really handy though when I was hunting state land that I had never been on before. Even found a way to upload topo maps on it.

I downloaded an app last yr ' huntstand.com' .It doesn't need cell service to use. It uses the gps on your phone. I used it all last yr learning my way around the 1500ac I hunt. I've got all the plots marked on it, good atv parking areas, good climbing trees, ladder stands, bedding areas, feeding areas etc. It shows topo view or regular google earth view. I also mapped out the boundaries and you can filter specific things out that you have marked.

The only thing, if using in a no service area it is recommended to sync up your map and scroll over the area before u lose service. Also it doesn't show a track path so I learned it's easiest to mark your parking location and as long as you know where point A and B is, you can find your way pretty easy with your moving icon that shows your exact location.

Get a Garmin and be done with it.

I also use an app on my phone. I carry it with me so why not make it work some more for me.

I would rather be tried by 12, than carried by 6.

Go to page 2 on serious deer hunting forum category. Look for a thread called" figuring out new property". I posted and answer with pics kind of think it is what what your looking for.

I might try the app again that Travis suggested. I have tried it before, and the GPS didn't work for me, even though it said it would without service. I pre-loaded the maps and everything, it may have just been something with my phone though.

I'm looking at getting a GPS, just because it would be good for backpacking as well, just don't have the funds right now, but maybe soon. Figured I'd start researching and looking now.

I'll be hunting a new lease this year, and I plan on walking in pretty far. Its unfamiliar land to me, so I'm hoping ill be able to get one before I really start walking around there a lot.

If you don't, you'll wonder why you didn't as you see all things GPS made for them. You'll also have to listen to everyone saying you should have. I had Garmin's, went elsewhere, and now I'm back.

If you want reliability and are doing hunts where knowing routes and marks are, get the Garmin. I have a Garmin for marking exact locations and routes and that's what I use. I have onx maps and Trimble GPS hunt on my phone, They do ok most of the time but, I only relay on them when they don't make or break me getting out of the hills.

I use Trimble with offline maps if I don't have decent service and the GPS on my phone and mark a stupid amount of stuff on there and this works pretty well. I know where I am and not lost in the wilderness. It works pretty good for marking POIs.

However for navigation over a large area it isn't as good as a Garmin can be. I use a Garmin out west. IMO don't really need that around here.

The app on my phone is GAIA GPS. It work with or without service. It has numerous layers as well as topo. It's $20. But too me it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a handheld n

I've had a garmin for 4 or so years. I never go hunting without it. Most areas that I hunt I really don't need it. I like to be able to get exactly from point A to point B as efficient as I can. I don't like wondering around in a circle on a mountain in the dark looking for the exact tree that I wanted to climb.

I bought a map card for my garmin- it shows every single property border in the state of Alabama along with who owns that piece of land.

Where did you get the map card? Do they make them for different Garmin models?

I have a Garmin Rino. Mine has a big screen, as far as Garmin goes, but I have to pull out my reading glasses to see anything on it. You can keep track of where your hunting partners are too. As long as they are using one. The radio comes in handy. It's really the only reason I still use it. It's hard to go wrong with a Garmin IMO. But Garmin is getting bad about coming out with a model and selling it for a couple, 3 years, then they discontinue the model. Then if you need support for it, tough. They will recommend you buy the "new" model. I won't buy another one.
But I mostly use a phone app called TopoMaps+. U can download many different types of maps for use without a signal. Several different topos and even satellite maps, for use without a signal. It's free to try. You can customize your waypoints, trails and trips etc. and your phone has a much bigger screen than the Garmin. I've used the Trimble and some of the others mentioned above. They are good. So far, I like TopoMaps+ best.

I've experienced nothing but great customer service with Garmin.
