New hunter here. Is this from injury or birth defect?

Since Ive been hunting Ive seen lots of bucks that were a spike on one side, I even killed several. It seems to occur alot in some areas. I have been told its in their genes.

Some fairly recent research seems to confirm it is not genetic. Link below.

Let's just say there has been a lot of debate on what causes a buck to be a SOOS buck. laugh

Regardless of cause - genetic, injury, pedicle damage, brain abscess, etc., one thing appears to be clear: they will virtually always remain a SOOS. The above article confirms that - once a SOOS, always a SOOS.

So you have to decide how you want to handle that.

Sausage....It seems to me that if you have spots that have a higher frequency of SOOS antlers that it would be genetic.
