I'm officially an "old fart" now!

I'm curious if anyone has experience trying to shoot with bifocals? Got some progressive lenses this year and I'm struggling. My distance vision isn't to bad but I got the short arm syndrome and can't see up close. I use a HHA optimizer single pin which helps with the blurry pin but starting to struggle being able to see well enough to adjust it without the glasses (also using a peep sight).

I've looked at the peep clarifies/verifiers but not convinced this is the way to go plus it doesn't help with the issue of seeing my single pin yardage adjustment.

I love to shoot my bow. One of the best forms of stress relief I have but I'm starting to get really frustrated with glasses.

Thanks for any suggestions or encouragement!

I was in the same boat. Trifocals for daily wear. Damn near impossible to focus on the pin. I ended up going to the optometrists office to order new frames and lenses. (The frames I was wearing daily would also interfere with my dominant eye when anchored.) The "shooting" glasses are entirely distance with small reading inserts (yes still bifocal) very low in the lense. I did install lenses in the peep to focus on the pin since the glasses are 90% distance. This is the best I can come up with. So far it's working. Growing old is not for the timid.

Glasses definitely are difficult. Got to keep them tight around the back of your ear so they can't move. I tried contacts and they just don't work for me. It's hard to see your pin through the peep and focus on the target.

It just takes practice. Ive been shooting with my glasses for about 4 months now. Took a lot of getting use to at first. I tried verifiers and clarifiers but just couldnt see clearly with either. I still cant shoot with my 4x lens sight with glasses on. Everything is blurry even with a clarifier. Lens is clear without my glasses though. Cant shoot without them with my hunting sight.

Thanks for the replies. I really like your solution Painter as I think something similar could help me. I've also read that for some people they have gone to the traditional lined bifocals instead of progressives so I was thinking about that as an option.

I'm struggling right now and just can't imagine giving up on shooting my bow so as much as anything I'm looking for some reassurance that it can be done with the aging eyes.

BTW to anyone who took my "old fart" comment as anything but poking fun at myself I sincerely apologize. Getting older and all the issues that come with it are certainly better than the alternative!!

Thanks again

ALDawg, FYI, the glasses I had made are hard line bi-focals and I do think they are better than transitions (cheaper too). I payed close attention to the fit and shape of the frames so that if I'm looking left (I shoot right handed) that the frame does not interfere with my vision. You'll get it figured out but there's no substitute for youth. Good luck.

With glasses on I'm constantly having to push the up to avoid looking through the frame when shooting. Thought about getting a strap to help hold them snug when shooting (that will really make me look cool...luckily I'm old enough not to really care anymore!).

I'm going to visit the optometrist and see what I can find and if they can build me a pair of lined bifocals with only a small section on the bottom. Sounds like these could be much better than what I'm dealing with now.

Thanks

I wear glasses also and have just about lost interest in bow hunting because of them. I wear no line bi-focals. Only thing I've found that makes a difference is I bought a pair of readers from Walmart. I got the strength that allows me to see ok at distance and ok up close. It was trial and error but I think I settled on 2.0 readers.

Don't give up. I killed this Kansas buck last year wearing my Bifocals. ( Progressive lens)

Mr Ellis Cogratulations! Any details about how you've been able to make the progressives work for you?

Smoke Diver thanks I tried the lower power readers today and first impression is not bad. Not perfect but not near the problems i was having with the bifocals.
