Definitely not unusual. I have been doing genealogy for a long time and have helped others with their research. If I had a dollar for everyone who had that story "my great, great so and so was full blooded Choctaw/Cherokee/etc" I would be able to pay for my Ancestry membership every year for free. We usually find no evidence of Native Americans in most all instances. The reality is that by the time that most people's European ancestors arrived here to the New World, the Native population had already decreased greatly and it was a rare event for a Euro to take a Native as a spouse. My own genetic profile has 2% Native American, but I know of two individuals in my family tree from my French Colonial ancestors who took a Native American wife, so that makes sense for me.

I just sent off the DNA kit for wife, so I am anxious to get the results back as her grandfather makes the same claims that his grandmother was "full blooded Choctaw", but I have found no documentation of this. If it is true, it should show up in her DNA, but I am not expecting it to be.

"Indian" is code word in the older generations for, your great great granddaddy was black.

Everybody in the whole state is dang "Indian" (feather). It really cracks me up that every guy thinks his great grandpa was running through the woods killing deer with a homemade bow and arra.

My grandmother always claimed that she was mostly Scottish. She did the DNA test and she isn't Scottish at all. It's all English. She found out that there were Lords and Ladies in her lineage.

She may have very well been told the same thing, your great,great,great, grandmother/grandfather could've had an affair. Folks may not have gotten divorced back in the day, like they do now. But it wasn't un-common for a spouse to just leave and start a new family elsewhere..Never know what you'll find when you start digging in your past, that's why a lot of folks don't do it....

A lot of family tree's that "sweet little great granny" kept up with have blanks or dead-ends for ancestors that were not approved of by later generations. In many cases those "un-approved" ancestors were blacks, indians, yankees, or just anyone that did not follow the narrative granny wanted her lineage to be.

My Grandpa's daddy "went out for milk!" and didn't return till he was done spreading his genes for several months. I asked Grandma once had she ever tried researching Great Grandpa she replied "No we best just leave that alone"!

I have family members that are very darked skinned and some even have black curly hair. Of course we were always told or our Native American heritage as an explanation, but quietly among ourselves, we cousins always suspected there were liaisons with another race along the way. I did the DNA test a couple of years ago to put the speculation to rest. I was surprised by the results. I'm 100% pure European. Mostly from the area that borders France and Germany. Some Russian, a little British and a little Italian with a tiny bit of Norse thrown in.

No African and no Native American.

I bet those dark skinned curly black hair relatives would get different results The Roberts side of my family we're big slave owners & I have ancestors from the New Orleans area. I'm kinda interested in doing the DNA thing myself hmmmmmm

I had a 30 year old daughter find me that I didn't know existed. My first cousin on my father's side and a 2nd cousin from my mother's side did this same thing y'all are talking about doing. She matched hers to mine. Once DNA is out there anything can happen.

This is the very reason why I'm so reluctant to do it. Some things are better off left alone

one of my great Aunts had a book printed that is 1 1/2" thick all on my families history, no need for current DNA tracers for me. I do have a horse thief that was hanged prolly 300 years ago in there. LOL

I wish I had a long lost son of about 14 years or so show up on my doorstep. We'd catch up and then I'd bestow upon him all the family heirlooms like a lawnmower and weedeater. Then I'd let the wife learn him the family skills like the finer nuances of hanging pictures and moving boxes of worthless junk from one room to another.
