would hunting over a creek be a good idea? I have a small creek on my property that is at the bottom of a holler that has about a 25 ft drop in elevation and is surrounded by large acorn producing white oaks. If it would be a good idea should I hunt at the bottom, on the side of the holler or at the top?

one thing to think about are your thermals. your scent will rise in the mornings and sink in the afternoons.

What he said and it depends on where the deer are coming from and how steep the hills are. You could have a deer come across the top if you were in the bottom and be looking down on you.

I tried to hunt a place like that years ago and no matter the wind I would get busted. I got one of those cotton fiber wind checkers and pulled a few out and released them. I saw real quick what was happening. The wind was swirling just like an eddy on the river. Those fibers floated around that hollow in circles all afternoon. There just wasn't anyway to hunt that spot from the bottom.

Never liked hunting down in the bottom of a tight hollow or bowl. Scent might go up on a clear cold day other than that it just hangs in the air. Plus the deer will be at eye level at some point.

I love hunting creeks and creek crossings. If the area has definite trails going to and crossing the creek, try hunting those trails without going down to the creek. If that doesn't produce results and they are hitting the acorns at the creek, then hunt the acorns at the creek. I wouldn't waste too much time before moving to the acorns, though. If you wait too long, they may start feeding on something else before you move. Good luck and keep us posted.

I was afraid of that with the wind swirling in the bottom. I hunted at the top once last year and had a couple does come by parallel with the creek about 1/4 of the way down the holler. I Thought I might catch a buck coming by early bow season for a drink.
I've also clocked several trails running along the tops of ridge fingers down to the creek, might that be a better place to hang a stand? Thanks for y'all's advice!

On steep hillsides there always seems to be a trail about 1/4 down that runs along the ridge. The deer use them so they can check out the bottom and see what is going on down there. I have had luck setting up just above this trails.

Stay on the hilltop.

Put cameras in the area you're thinking about near this creek. Set two out, back to back on the same tree, along the trail where you think they're using the creek. Don't check it for a good while - several weeks. then look at your pics and determine where you need to set up. THEN check the wind for that tree.
We had a creek/ditch running through a 100 acre pine stand that the deer used as a travel route. It was 4-5 ft deep in spots. We had no clue it was a travel corridor until we noticed antlers moving along the creek in a video clip from a trail camera.
