So I know there have been a few questions asked about minerals and what attracts deer for trail cam pics and so on. I was wondering if anyone had there own "recipe" for a mineral site? I'm hunting 2350 acres on Qdm land and want to make 4 mineral sites in my favorite spots in the woods. I'd like these sites to stay active, so maybe something that soaks into the ground? I appreciate any suggestions, thanks!

50lb bag rock salt
50lb bag trace minerals
(2) 50lb bags dicalcium phosphate

Some people add dried molasses as well.

I use 2 parts red trace mineral to 1 part di-cal phosphate. That being I put out a 50 lb bag of trace mineral and 25 lb di-cal. That is all you need , NO NEED TO ADD MORE SALT, red trace is 90 % or more salt. No need to add kool-aid, molasses, pudding or anything else.

Thanks for the responses. Should I dig a hole and put the minerals in the ground or just make a pile like corn? I'm new to this

I find a depression in the ground or take a shovel and dig one, then just pour it on top of the ground. I just don't want a big rain washing it away before the deer make a big hole out of it.

Trophy Rock and the plane powder white deer caine. I po <r the powder coca inexpensive on the ground ,then put the trophy rock on top.that way when it rains the coca inexpensive is activated and the deer will tear it up.the trophy rock stays solid to make your site last longer.you can pour a bag of corn around it to get the deer started faster.

I do not have a recipe, but I will tell you a trick I like best. I use bag a buck. I don't think I got the name right. But all the minerals are in a burlap bag. I hang it in a tree. When it rains, it soaks the bag and drips on the ground. The deer absolutely destroy it! I went from 250-290 pictures in one month, to 1200 the next month.

A 20 dollar bag, is said to last 6-9 months I believe.

if you make your own, try doing the burlap bag in a tree way.

Make sure you have clay base or the salt will leach through. I have a salt lick that I started in the early 80s and have started many more since then. I start them all with a mineral block and after they are established for a couple of years I will add dical or any of the name brand mineral blends but always put a mineral block in every February or March.

Mine is similar to the others: 50lbs trace mineral, 25 lbs dical, and 12lbs calcium carbonate (granular feed grade lime). The lime is supposed to make the dical taste better.

I've used Rack Rock with lots of success, and the cheapest mineral licks I've ever made are with iodized table salt. Take panty hose and pour a box of salt in it and hang in tree out of deers reach. When it rains it will drip and the deer will dig the hole underneath. It will usually last about 3 months depending on the rainfall. Perfect for placing a camera nearby for plenty of pics!

That calcium carbonate ingredient is interesting.

I usually just buy the blocks. Cheap and easy. I use the red mineral block and we do not hunt the sites.
If you plan to, regular white salt (grain or block) I believe is all that you can hunt over. But make sure before you take my word for it.
It will take a while (1-2 year) to establish the site, but don't give up. I have used some corn to aid in startup too. They will not visit the site much when it is cold either from my experience.
