We are looking at a new tract of land for our club, about 1,200 acres, from a timber company. It is a 3 year lease, locked in price including insurance. There are a lot of hogs on it, not a big plus IMHO for a deer hunting club, but when we met with the timber company representative he had a letter from the state showing that it comes pre-approved by the state to harvest hogs by any means available, bait, night shooting or any means available year round. He said kill em all. This is the first time I have known of a company going out of it's way to offer a deal like that. I've seen tracts of young trees that were decimated by hogs, they rooted up the young pines and bit the root off of them.

The State has approved everyone to be able to hunt hogs 24hr a day except deer season. You can use thermals and spotlight at night with no permit required. If you are caught hunting with thermals or spotlight during deer season you will be ticketed.
This will be in the new hunting regs for the coming year.

I believe the term "Conventional methods" does not include thermal optics nor night vision equipment. I believe you will still have to have depredation permits to use said equipment.

Chuck Sykes told us at the Game Check meeting that we would not need a permit for any hog hunting. He said we could use night vision equipment, suppressors and we could bait and or trap use dogs just kill them any way we want. He said no night hunting during deer season because even the best of us would be tempted to shoot a big buck and they need to be able to enforce laws on spotlighting. He said if it's legal for you to own (thermals & suppressors) it's legal to kill hogs with it. He also said the same about raccoon and possums...just kill them all with no permit.
Did he mislead us or did I misunderstand?
I have been wrong before and I don't need anyone getting in trouble because of me.

Based on the above email, I would say you misheard or he misspoke. The email says that a permit is still needed for night vision/bait.

i think its kinda stupid to make you get a depredation permit to hunt hogs over bait. If you need a depredation permit, then you dont really need bait because the hogs are already coming in and destroying crops.

I can put you in contact with my friend who has hog dogs and will come whenever you let him. my experience hunting with dogs is very affective in killing them and just getting them to move off the property

I had emailed the DCNR to clarify what was said and Chuck Sykes very graciously replied to my email. I think I'm on the right track now.

I misspoke. Prior to this past legislative session, the Code of Alabama 9-11-235 prohibited hunting feral pigs at night. The newly amended version of the law allows for the DCNR Commissioner to establish seasons for hunting certain game animals at night. The Commissioner has since established that feral pigs can be hunted at night from May 1 through August 30 using weapons and methods permissible during daytime hours including legally permitted suppressors.

The law still prohibits the use of thermal imaging or night vision equipment or the use of bait while hunting game animals including feral pigs.. However it is permissible to utilize these devices or methods when operating under a special depredation permit. The process for obtaining these permits remains the same as in the past by contacting the nearest WFF District office.

I apologize for the misinformation .

Glad you got that cleared up!
And, it takes a big man to admit he made a mistake.
Kudos to Chuck for manning up and setting the record straight.

I know some dog hunters that use to come from out of state just to hunt hogs there. Must be loaded down there!
