The dog bite bill got me to looking at my statement of benefits.
1)Had a son go into the ER on a Saturday b/c he thought he might have appendicitis. One CT scan and 1.5 hours later he was released - something else minor. Bill $11,187 just for ER, havent gotten the Dr bill yet.
2)I went to ENT b/c my ears were causing problems. Drops in ears and they stuck something in my nose to look in it. All at the doctors office. Bill listed "surgery" and was for $900 of which my insurance paid $65 and said I owed the rest. I'm going to see them tomorrow afternoon - billing department that is. Just got the bill - visit was in November and now I can't use my flex account to pay it.
3) Son got a knee brace after surgery - $1,500. Insurance paid none. My wife took two braces with her to the hospital from the same company (from another childs surgery) but they said they wouldnt work on this son. You lay the 3 side by side and you can't tell them apart.

Pisses me off!

not sure what the best way to handle them is but they shouldnt be on tv and gettn married and raisin kids

And to think any illegal could walk into the ER, write down a fake name, get the same treatment for free and never pay a dime.

There is a reason cash only and membership based health care is growing. The insurance industry has warped the system. More so over the last 7 1/2years.

Total expenses for my recent surgery was $124,000 and some change. Thank goodness for Honda insurance. $225 out of pocket for me was it.

Hate to tell you but they don't even have to use a fake name.

Taylor, don't you wish old Dr. Moore still had his clinic in Orrville? Well not you, but you know what I'm getting at. Until Medicare forced him out, for $35 cash only, you could go see a MD and that includes the prescription and all. Wasn't that many years ago either.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

That's why it's so high, to make up for the non-payers. The hospital has to pay the light bill too. If those non-payers would pay then I bet you wouldn't even need insurance to pay a bill outside of a big surgery. Could pay oop. That's what pisses me off about doctor bills. I have to pay more because of the people who pay none.

My son got snake bit by a moccasin back in May. One night in the ER and one round of antivenom was billed as $45K.

3toe is right. They have to charge so much due to those that do not pay. Hospitals close down all the time. Until we can figure out a way to prevent people who present to the ER for a cold, then bills will still be that high.

On a side note a couple of years ago there was an ambulance who was call in to get a patient and was ultimately brought to the ER to be treated for athletes foot. Think how much that trip cost that didn't get paid and the fact that someone probably had a heart attack during that time that couldn't get transport. Pisses me off

There are places that are starting to have nurse practitioners and PA's ride on the ambulances. If they show up to a call and it's not bad enough to take them to a hospital, they treat on sight and prescribe meds. It saves sooooooo much money.

That is a definite necessity. I have not heard that for my area.

Places in Ohio have been the prototype testing areas, but it's spreading. It's amazing that it's taken us this long to do it.

When I worked for a hospital in New Mexico, we had an elderly illegal that had to take a shot every day at noon. His daughter could not take off work, so every day (Mon - Fri), she called for an ambulance to take him to the ER. Not a dime was ever paid on his account. I can't tell you how many Mexican mothers would sneak across the border to deliver babies in El Paso. All free for them. Many of those newborns required extended hospital stays because of lack of pre natal precautions.

I wish proof of US citizenship was required before ER services are performed on non insured patients.

I wish the "anyone born in the United States is automatically a citizen" deal would end because it's a drain on America, but that's a spinoff thread.

The medical industry definitely is a behemoth money machine.

Your insurance doesn't cover you in other countries. So, do you wish the same for you if you are out of the country on vacation and need emergency care?

Blanket statements like that don't help the situation.

Now, I do with that they could refuse no emergency medical care in the ERs for anyone who is not insured. Private hospitals used to be able to do that.

Wonder why medical professionals allow the insurance&phamarceutical industries to mess up health care?

Does anyone else notice that the bills/EOB are coming in so much later? I got an anethetiolgist bill 10 months late and my ENT 7 months late. Both of them screwed up the way I would have planned my end of policy year medical expenses. I wonder if there is some way they are gaining cause is sure is counterintuitive to business billing practices.
