Sounds to me that there will be 19000 acres up lease soon......there will still be hunting on the land. It's not the end of the world. The Alabama Dog Hunters Association should get it's members together and lease as much as they can. Tony I overheard a conversation yesterday at the store about that very thing. They were planning on pooling all their money together and leasing as much of it they can, when they can. All of em had them orange dog hunter's association decals on their trucks. Many days of my youth were spent dog hunting IP land around Styx river. Good times. I wouldn't mind joining a dog hunting club just so my daughter and stepson could experience it.

The problem is that there hasn't been a sighting of this snake in over thirty years on this land, if at all. There are occasional sandy ridges with some remnant Longleaf, but not in pure stands. The majority of this land is loamy with a clay base and will grow Loblolly extremely well. So...now the government tells them they have to limit site preparation methods, have influence on their burn regime, and possibly dictate what species they grow and for how long. I would kick the government off of my land too ! This is extreme government over-reach....no hollow reason about it !

Without proof of an endangered species being present there why would they manage their lands any differently ? They have abided by all regulations and would continue to do so but not based on non-scientific suspicion of some species existing that hasn't been seen in years in it's core habitat which is about 50 miles south of this location. This same "over-reach" over the BPS was a driver in the Boykin Management Area lease being pulled as well. I manage lands in close proximity to both of these past WMA's and can tell you that only one of the WMA's is even located in the preferred habitat for the BPS and species associates such as the Gopher Tortoise, and that would be Boykin. Why would it be different if it were a WMA or not?

Its privately owned land and they can do what they want with it. Consider it a privilege that they let the general public hunt it for 60 years. They did not even have to give an explanation for shutting it down but they felt they needed to.

Guys,
A lot of work and money goes into managing an endangered species. And, a whole lot of restrictions are put into place as well. A snail or plant (or snake or tortoise) can have big impacts. Sounds like some Environmental Hero had an agenda and used the "public access" key to further his agenda. Bottom line is thanks for the last 60 years of access but the finger needs to be pointed at real world current DATA and public hearings on the facts.
Guess what, some dinosaur used to be on that land too. Next we will be closing interstates because they could impact bringing back T-Rex's to their natural habitat.
Don't give up, don't ever give up!

Local rumor has it that there was some 'turkey research' going on that involved a researcher that was particularly adamant about trying to find an endangered species. The straw that broke the camels back. Probably trying to kill pigs..........

The straw that broke the camels back. Heck, all they had to do was ask Len if there were any pine snakes on the property. If they are there he probably knows where they are likely to be seen.
"Cull" is just another four letter word...
