Man that's turrible. I didn't hunt there but hate to see any land withdrawn from the WMA system.

They raped the land anyway. Not many trees left.
I hunted it back in the 90's and it was some fine country.

What exactly did the black pine snake have to do with the closing of the property? I was wondering the same thing. Got to be a back story to this.

What exactly did the black pine snake have to do with the closing of the property? I suspect the pine snake thing to be a cover for the real reason BUT...... I guess they could think that unfettered access to the property for Gov employees could result in Pine Snake sightings resulting in loss of land use. In other words not being able to manage the land as they see fit due to the existence of an endangered or "threatened" species. Just like the tracts in Monroe County that can't be cut due to the Red Hill Salamander or the Red Cockaded Woodpecker. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for species being preserved but they go about it ALL wrong. They essentially "take" the land (or its value) by restricting the landowners right to harvest timber, or other management steps he might wish to take. The natural reaction if a landowner sees something like that on his place now is to get rid of it, quickly). If there was some sort of compensation for not being able to use his land as he wishes (darn those pesky private property rights) there might be more people incentivized to help propagate the species.

I hate it for y'all that hunt it but I don't blame Scotch. Call me crazy but I believe the federal government will make up anything without scientific research to back it up to stop any and all hunting.

Its their land, they own it, it was a privilege that they let the public use it for so long. They really did not have to give any explanation but they felt they needed to. So that's that. They may sell it soon, so what, its none of our business what they do with it now.

End of an era. First ones to go were Covington and Escambia Creek. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the scotch property went up for sale and forever wild got it. Seems like most WMAs down here are owned by FW or the state now.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the scotch property went up for sale and forever wild got it. Not very likely. It's family land. Surrounded by other family land in the area / county. The land is managed just like their other lands. It was just a nice gesture to make it public for so long.

It sucks to lose public hunting lands. Truly does. But these still are privately owned lands. The owners are not just going to roll over and say "Well, it's being used for public hunting so we can't cut timber, manage or do anything."
Given the financial straights many state wildlife agencies are in throughout the country, private (or corporate) owners allowing lands to be used for public hunting and other uses probably will continue to decline. Liability, the constant complaints about nitpicky things, possibly being hamstrung by some agreements, getting whacked by the feds on some issues (like this snake thing) ... it's no surprise that a big private landowner or corporate owner would end a public-use agreement and keep it in house.

I would guess that the aggravation out weighs the tax break.

The ESA is a powerful tool that the antis use to bludgeon everyone they can. I'm not sure what's at play here but the language of the statement suggests such rotten characters are involved.

I don't wear tinfoil hats, but I tend to agree with Ticka. The ESA has so much mumbo-jumbo, red tape and such that it appears it could be rife for possible abuse and few in the public could fight it.
Who the hell knows how many Special Snowflake Snakes or Totally Rad Turtles lived in a place 150+ years ago and how many are there now? So 19,000+ acres is impacted because of 20 snakes found over three decades? Or the "Gulf Beach Mouse" that looks like a friggin' hamster and only has been seen by a few people will prohibit, limit or restrict development, even by a guy who owns land and wants to put up a little beach shack?
It just sucks sometimes, or makes you wonder if antis are pulling strings, when a spider or mouse or green-eyed horsefly has more power thanks to the Feds and the ESA.

If you own land, in southwest alabama, especially land where timber production is a priority, you may want to be brushing up on black pine snake current events. I don't care if you own 40 acres or 4000. No tinfoil hat needed. This is quickly becoming a reality.....

I'm 50 years old. I don't know for how many of those years decades I've heard about this elusive "beach mouse" that has supposedly lived and needs protection along the GS/OB coastline (short as it is). I've been up at all hours of the day and night at the beach, been out at night with lights, been in supposed "beach mouse" territory. Never have seen one. They damn sure must be "threatened."
Of course, I've had a hunting license for 34 years and never have received a post-season hunting survey, either. Those things must be protected, too. LOL

Sounds like something is rotten in Denmark. I bet wolves are eating coonhounds over there.
I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

I saw a beach mouse once. Either that or a rat. Saw one down here on the beach too. He was in a dumpster, and pulled a knife on me. They're not as cute and cuddly as we're led to believe.

Of course, I've had a hunting license for 34 years and never have received a post-season hunting survey, either. Those things must be protected, too. LOL
If you want I'll just forward my annual survey to you next year. In the end I guess it doesn't matter which of us does it except they really must value my opinion. It's about every year for me, but I don't mind doing it if they put the data to use.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
