My wife's on me to re-tile our shower. I don't think it looks too bad but obviously she does. I've never done a tile job so any advise would be greatly appreciated. I've watch the youtubes and read about how to do it but never hands on.

I am in the middle of this as we speak. The people that did ours did crappy work and it began to leak. I used the Kerdi Shulter board for the backer board and got one of their shower pan kits. If you get this kit make sure you get the residential one. Yes its expensive but worth it if you ask me. I have all the tile, and I have two walls precut. Take your time and dont rush it. If you have any questions feel free to PM me and I will explain to the best I can from my little experience.

use a schluter waterproofing system, you'll never have to worry about it leaking. So is it as simple as ripping out old tile, installing schluter system, mortar, tile, grout, seal?

use a schluter waterproofing system, you'll never have to worry about it leaking. So is it as simple as ripping out old tile, installing schluter system, mortar, tile, grout, seal? Not exactly, but it's not rocket science. Feel free to text me any questions/pictures as you go. 334-399-1263 You have to use an unmodified thinset (no latex additive) ours is bonsal 275, (if you have latex it will never dry out.) You need a 2" drain pipe sticking out of the floor, the schluter drain easily mounts to it. Always overlap the ditra 2" when making a joint. If you read up on it you will see it's a superior system to the one used for the last 50+ years, instead of the rubber shower pan being below the mud bed catching the water, this is all over the sloping mud bed. Basically all of your shower water goes straight down drain and doesn't get in the mud bed and get soggy and nasty. I went to the Schluter School for a couple of days at the NTCA HQ in Clemson SC. Very good system. Very user friendly There are a lot of videos about the installation around, and they have a pretty good website OP, go to Henry Tile company in Pensacola and they'll steer you where you need to be

I'll add one thing what jbc said, if you are replacing your shower and you gave a slab on grade foundation you will have to get a residential adapter for the drain, I found out the hard way. Other than that, I read the directions and watched the videos.

When I was remodelling my house years ago I used Schluter. The building inspector had never seen it and at first freaked out. At that time the normal way was to use regular drywall as the backer. When he saw that he was going to fail me. I asked him to look into it before he did that. He came back and said it would be ok. That was about 6-7 years ago. I have had no problems. Here is a great resource for tile projects. When I did mine I paid alot of attention to floor deflection (bending). I also used ditra on the floors to keep them from cracking. http://www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/
I love my country, but don't trust my government.

If you can find it locally this is the stuff to use. There is not an underlayment out there that is easier to use and it will not leak. Install directly to the studs and tile directly to the wedi board. http://www.wedi.de/en-us/
