I go to Africa at least a couple of times a year to work with an orphan project that my father and I started years ago. We have a partnership with a hunting outfitter there that donates meat from hunts to us to help feed the kiddos and we take hunters over to him so it is a good win-win for both parties. My older brother went with me a couple of weeks ago. He has never killed anything with a bow and I’ve really been working on him to start bow hunting with me. I had stalked up and bagged a warthog the 1st day there so a couple of days later when I saw another larger one, I handed him the bow and told him to get ready. (Btw, I took the bow, an older switchback, to Shaw before I left and had him put new strings on it) My brother accompanied me to do camera work and to help me transport the meat and distribute it etc., so he wasn’t expecting to have an opportunity to have his first bow kill….in Africa. I had prepped him a bit by making him sling a few arrows the day before but he thought I was just letting him try out my bow. When the hog started our way, I handed him the bow and release and he barely had time to put it on before the hog came within bow range of the blind we were in. I had also prepped him some of how quick the warthogs are in jumping string when I shot mine. They are amazingly difficult to shoot with a bow because they can drop and duck the arrow even at close yardages. The warthog was wary at first but finally relaxed and came in to about 10 yards. We let him start eating some alfalfa that we had put out and continue to relax. The air was perfect but you couldn’t even whisper to each other because of how close the pig was. Brother man put a perfect shot on the pig and thought he had missed at first. I saw and heard the arrow hit but one blink and the hog was gone like lightning. I had it on film and played it back for him slo-mo to show him that although the pig had started to drop before the arrow hit, it was a complete pass-thru and got both lungs but on film you could see the arrow was still in the air after the pig was gone and could see the arrow drop to the ground. I hope to be able to figure out how to post the vid later. Anyway, it provided a lot more meat for the kids and an awesome time to share with my older brother. I may be looking for another bow now. He took it back to Okeechobee with him because I stayed in Africa a while when he came back. I may never see that bow again.

Coolest thing I have read on here in a while! That is so awesome. I would love to go on a bow hunt in Africa. Where at in Africa? I have a special place in my heart for orphanages there, have done some work in Uganda. Don't think there is much hunting in Uganda though. Thanks for sharing, really enjoyed reading this. And nice HOG!

My warthog was smaller but this was the most fun I've had hunting in a long time. I kept being told that I'm not gonna be able to stalk close enough with a bow in the open area where I spotted this one but I had to prove them wrong. There was a couple of bushes and the wind was right so I gave it a shot for a good 45 min or so. I was within 40 yards of it finally when a large Nyala bull about 60 yards away saw me and almost gave me away. It started blowing but the hog just looked up for a min while I froze then went back to grazing along with his head down. I advanced another 5 yds then figured aiming a bit low at 35 was the best I could do. Light was fading fast and I could barely get a pin on him, so I let one fly. He ducked a few inches but the arrow caught him just below the spine and he was down. I stuck another one in him in case he got his legs under him and he was finished. Of course around the fire that night the story was appropriately embellished.

Great story thumbup

You should share on the General Forum where more people would possibly read. That is a great picture.

Cool story.

I've shot several over the years to include a big boar in the Natal in 2014. None of them had that much "orange" on them.

Congrats!
