Cold turkey is the way to go.
I stopped in September 2007 while I was on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska.
My plan was to just not but another can. The first few times went into a gas station and saw it behind the shelf was tough but I haven't bought another can since.

I used to love me a good ole dip. Heck I used to love a good chew, cigar, cigarette, drink.... I wish I could go back and undo all the abuse I've done to my body. Cigarettes was the toughest. It's been more than 12-13'ish years since I've smoked and I still catch myself craving one or if I'm stressed I'll catch myself holding my fingers like I'm holding a cigarette.
