go to Tannehill Park this month Feb 26-28 and look at em and shoot some to see what ya like. There will be a couple hundred trad shooters there and lots of vendors.

I would suggest starting with a low poundage bow to start with, work on your form, and move up in weight accordingly.

I would rather be turkey hunting

So I take it that it's not like compound where you just get what you can comfortably get back?

Do you just pull back a certain distance? there is obviously no back wall

I been shooting trad for 2 years , I have had no desire to pick up my compound. I wish I could tell you how to get started but I am still learning myself. What I have learned has came the hard way. The best thing I have done its join a trad only group on Facebook. Lots of guys there that can give good advice because the live and bleed trad.

no you will be able to pull more weight than you can comfortably shoot for an extended period, and you do not have a back wall, you have an anchor point,it is very important to practice good form, and consistent anchor point.pull with your back muscles not your arms.Start out shooting short distances,5 to 10 yards.

With your draw length I would go with a bow rated #45 AMO, which would be 45# at a 28" draw. You will probably pull 26" and depending on the bow, will put you around 40 to 42#. As Troy stated, the best thing to do is go to the trad shoot at Tannehill and try as many out as you can. You'll be able to tell what bow length and weight you are comfortable with and whether you prefer a recurve or longbow.

The Tannehill shoot is really cool with some great folks who can help you and also with bows you could try. I'd forgotten it was the end of this month. May toodle down there Saturday.

jbc, don't let your testosterone pick your draw weight, like I did on my first one.

My draw weight on my compound was 85 lbs and I could shoot with good form for 4 hours of more. There were many days that I did shoot for 4 hours.

I got my first recurve when I was 20 years old. I had been shooting a compound bow every day, usually for at least an hour a day since I was 15. I lived to shoot a bow.

I bought a beautiful Martin Hatfield Takedown 65lbs at 28" I was NEVER able to shoot that bow properly. Being left handed, especially back then, I had to special order every bow. I got that one in an could barely shoot it. I never got to where I could shoot it comfortably. I developed a terrible snap shooting habit and it's been hard to overcome.

If you can't try out some bows, I'd suggest going lighter than you think you need to.

I have an ILF bow now and the limbs that are on it currently are 30 lbs. It is a pleasure to shoot and I can work on form. If you think traditional archery is something you're going to stick with, I'd look at getting a riser made for ILF limbs then you can swap out to a heavier set for hunting and a lighter set for dinking around with.

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Hit me up one day jbc I've got 1 recurve and about 6 longbow you can tryout and see if it's to you liking. Then you can go out and spend a small fortune on a nice Lynn Harrelson bow!!!
Tannehill is a real fun shoot also there are some shoots st Brierfield with Alabama society of traditional bowmen.
If your in need of a challenge you'll be hooked!!!
This is a pic of my first 100% traditional kill.75# Selfbow, wooden arrows, stone point. Even though it was only a little old 65lb doe that was standing 20 yards away it is still my biggest trophy because of the gear used and the challenge it offered [/img]

And by the way my first traditional bow was bought at a shoot in Mississippi. It was a used 69# at 28 Lofton longbow that will sling a 2216 with a 125gr head at 195fps. I would hate to even try to calculate how many arrows have passed by its shelf if I had to take a guess it would be over 10,000. Its kill 41 deer, 4 hogs, 1 turkey, and a porcupine! Paid $75 for it from Bob Lofton of Lofton longbows and I still shoot it at least twice a month. Its short and stubby and not a lot to look at but it's a killing machine and it I run out of arrows I'll just use it to beat them to death.
